2015 Best in Show Winner: Kashif Javaid

March 6, 2015 By exposeddc

Kashif Javaid - This reminded me of Diane Arbus
This reminded me of Diane Arbus by Kashif Javaid

We debuted Best in Show awards last year and they proved to be such a popular addition to the contest, we were eager to bring them back for our 9th annual Exposed DC Photography Show. Of the 42 photographs in this year’s exhibit, five have been recognized by a panel of distinguished D.C. metro-area editors and photojournalists. The five winning photographers will each receive a $100 cash prize from Exposed DC.

We’ll be announcing the winners daily through next Tuesday.

This year’s first Best in Show recipient is the superb “This reminded me of Diane Arbus” by Kashif Javaid. Well done Kashif! His photo was chosen by judge Susana Raab, a fine-art and documentary photographer working in Washington, D.C. She told us (before she know what Kashif titled it):

I selected this image because of its simplicity and the unusualness of the moment found within an everyday scene.  I love how the awkwardness of the girl’s arms caught inside her coat and the gesture of her hands over her eyes creates an allegorical image – a blank canvas ripe for projection.  The photograph has a Diane Arbusian appeal within its discomfort and tension.  I think the photographer was successful in transforming the ordinary into an iconic image. Special Judges for the 2015 Exposed DC Photography Show

January 20, 2015 By Heather Goss

ExposedDC2015ShowGraphic3

We loved being able to reward a few talented photographers with a special award last year, granted by some of the most distinguished photographers in the D.C. area, so we’re doing it again!

This year our judges are photojournalists, fine artists, and picture editors, have images held in the private collections from the Getty to the Smithsonian, seen their work regularly published in The New York Times and by the Associated Press, and won armfuls of awards and fellowships. They’re already looking at the winning 42 images to find their favorites. Each winning photographer will get a $100 cash prize from Exposed DC.

Will the discerning eye of one of our judges pick yours? We’ll announce the winners just before the exhibit opens on March 12.

Now, meet our special judges: Lauren Stockbower, Cynthia Connolly, Randall Scott, Susana Raab, and Evan Vucci.

Exposed DC is pleased to announce its 8th annual Exposed DC Photography Show at Long View Gallery, from March 19 to April 6, 2014. After seven wonderful years with DCist, we’re now closing in on our first year since we launched as an independent, year-round venture last June, and we’re proud to say it’s been a success. We’re working hard to cultivate the local photography community, from hobbyist to professional, with our website that features interviews with local talent, reams of informational guides for everything from studio rentals to photography classes, and a calendar highlighting every photography event in the region. We’ll continue to build on this community that our annual exhibition has created through exciting new features and events in the coming year.

Our 49 winning photographs were chosen from a contest for their unique view of the Washington area – not as a political venue or tourist destination, but as a place where we live and work and love every day. Six of those photographs will be awarded our inaugural Best in Show award and $100 prize, chosen by a panel of distinguished metro-area photojournalists, and made possible by the Corcoran College of Art + Design.

Our opening reception will be held in Long View’s newly expanded 9,000 square foot gallery space. Local businesses will complete our celebration of everything Washington, with beer from the new Bluejacket Brewery, wine from Boxwood Winery, Cavanagh Family Imports and A&M Imports, and a delicious selection of bites from Founding Farmers and Farmers Fishers Bakers, Tel’Veh Wine Bar, and Everlasting Life Vegan Restaurant. We’ve invited DJ Sequoia and v:shal kanwar back to spin tunes.

Tickets are $15 in advance, with limited $20 tickets at the door.

Join us for a free after party in The Passenger’s theater. 8 p.m. to close, cash bar.

A full-color Exhibition Program with the 2014 winners will be available for $10. The special issue 5th Anniversary Magazine from 2011 will also be available for $25. At the reception only, guests can purchase them together for $30.

Long View Gallery is located at 1234 9th St. NW, just a few blocks from the Mt. Vernon/Convention Center Metro.  All photographs displayed will be for sale.  Regular gallery hours are Wednesday-Saturday, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., Sunday, 12 to 5 p.m. Free.

The 2014 Exposed DC Photography Show is a Ten Miles Square LLC production.

Announcing the 2014 Exposed DC Contest Winners

January 15, 2014 By exposeddc

2014_show_graphic10We hoped that the many supporters in the photography community we’ve cultivated over the years would follow us when we decided to launch Exposed DC on its own, as a year-round entity. We’re relieved to say: Boy did you ever! A contest with over 200 contestants and 560 entries can be a tough one to judge, but our team had an amazing time going through all your visions of Washington area life and culture. Our sincere thanks to everyone who participated, and we hope you’ll keep up with us throughout the year.

Before we get too far: Don’t forget to join us tonight for our January meetup, and to celebrate our 2014 winners, at The Hamilton at 6 p.m. We hope to see lots of new faces!

Yes, the winners of our contest, which will be exhibited in the 8th annual Exposed DC Photography Show, are after the jump. Congratulations to those chosen this year; you’ll be notified by email with more instructions soon. Your photos are now in the hands of our team of special judges: Lucian Perkins, Jacquelyn Martin, Dan Westergren, Nancy Walz, and Jamie Rose. Five of you will win their Best in Show award, which comes with a $100 cash prize sponsored by the Corcoran College of Art + Design. Focused on the idea of direct and intensely creative education, the Corcoran College of Art + Design is the only accredited college of art and design in the museum and college-rich environment of Washington, D.C. We’ll announce these prizes closer to the show.

Exposed DC 2014 Contest Sponsors

The Exposed DC Photography Show will open on March 19, 2014 at the newly renovated Long View Gallery, and we’ll take over all 9,000 square feet with our celebration of Washington, D.C. You’ll enjoy featured beers from the new and already highly praised Bluejacket DC, made onsite at their Navy Yard warehouse. Grab a selection of tasty snacks from local restaurants, including Founding Farmers and Farmers Fishers Bakers, dedicated to eco-friendly and sustainable dining, and mouthwatering flavors from Tel’Veh Wine Bar‘s Executive Chef Dimo Kolouas. Our popular table-turner is back again this year, so you can enjoy all this goodness with mood-setting music from DJ Sequoia and v:shal kanwar.

The fun doesn’t end at the gallery this year. After you’re done gazing at all the art you can handle, walk a couple blocks over to The Passenger, which is hosting our first-ever afterparty in their theater.

Additional and much appreciated support for the Exposed DC Photography Show comes from some D.C. area businesses that have helped build up the photography scene that exists today:

  • The Washington School of Photography in Rockville, Md. offers classes, workshops, professional programs, as well as regular events, and all the facilities a photographer could need.
  • The Capital Photography Center offers classes with tons of individual attention and hands-on experience in the field.
  • HOIST Studio in Fairfax, Va. offers rental space and hosts resident photographers who use the studio as their private workspace.
  • The Historical Society of Washington, D.C. collects, interprets, and shares the history of our nation’s capital, including over 100,000 historic images of Washington. They also photography workshops and neighborhood tours and develop exhibitions on the city’s history.

If you are interested in sponsoring the Exposed DC Photography Show, it’s not too late! Email us at info[at]exposeddc.com for more information.

Tickets to the March 19 opening from 6 to 10 p.m., which includes the exhibit, snacks and open bar, are available for purchase now for $15. Limited tickets may be available for $20 at the door, but we always sell out so don’t be left in the cold!
