ENTER NOW: The 10th Exposed DC Photo Contest is Open!

December 2, 2015 By exposeddc

Enter the 10th Annual Exposed DC Photo Contest!

Exposed DC is celebrating a decade of local photography this year. Since 2006 we’ve featured images by D.C.-area photographers who disregard the tourist and political sides of the nation’s capital to reveal the real city we live, love, and work in every day.

We’ve consistently kept our entry fees low to encourage photographers of all levels to submit their work. It’s time to show us what metro-area Washington, D.C. culture, art, food, sports, and street life are to you. For inspiration, you can see last year’s winners here.

Submit your photos by midnight, January 6, 2016

This spring, the 2016 Exposed DC Photography Exhibit will be hosted by:

Winners of the contest will be exhibited March 10-April 1 at a venue truly worthy of a 10-year celebration. Opening night will be held throughout the two floors of the historic Carnegie Library, from the elegant ballroom downstairs to The Historical Society of Washington, D.C.’s upstairs headquarters, where our exhibit will have the honor of being featured next to permanent exhibits that tell the story of our nation’s capital. Winners will also be featured in a special edition of our annual magazine, a companion to our 2011 5th anniversary edition.

The Historical Society of Washington, D.C., is a community-supported educational and research organization that collects, interprets, and shares the history of our nation’s capital. Founded in 1894, it serves a diverse audience through its collections, public programs, exhibitions, and publications.

Washington is known throughout the world as a monumental federal city. Less well-known are the stories of Washington’s many diverse and vibrant communities. The Society helps make this local history easily accessible to the public to promote a sense of identity, place, and pride in Washington and to preserve this heritage for future generations.

Tonight, December 2, join us for our December happy hour at Right Proper Brewing to kick off our 10th anniversary. Join us from 6 to 8 p.m. and meet the Exposed DC team, previous years’ winners, and all your fellow photography lovers. And get those photos submitted ASAP!

In Frame: The World War II Flyover

May 13, 2015 By exposeddc

We had a great time with everyone who came to our meetup at the Jefferson Memorial to watch the World War II warbirds fly over D.C. on May 8. Thanks again to the wonderful Colonel Scott Willey, who told us all about what was flying over. We got a couple of you lucky ducks VIP access to the roof of the tallest building in Rosslyn, and tons of you scattered around D.C. getting whatever sights you could. Here are the best shots from the #WW2Flyover:

Our 9th annual Exposed DC Photography Show kicked off with a bang last night! Thanks to everyone who came out to celebrate our fantastic D.C. area photographers and their 42 images of life in the District. You can buy any of the (very affordable!) framed photographs in the show at our online store. You can also buy the official exhibition magazine at MagCloud or in person at our free closing reception on April 11, 4 to 8 p.m. Additional dates to view the exhibition for free are:

– Saturday, March 14, 4:30-7:30pm
– Friday, March 20, 6-8pm
– Saturday, March 28, 6-8pm

Huge thanks go to Capital Fringe, who hosted the show in their brand new headquarters in Trinidad. Their staff was amazing last night, and the Fringe team has been a great partner for us this year. Fringe offers theater, music, and other events year round, including the annual Capital Fringe Festival in the summer – sign up for their newsletter to check out the latest offerings.

Hundreds of you raised a glass for Bluejacket last night and their killer beers brewed right here in D.C. Last night they poured for us their Forbidden Planet – Dry-Hopped Kolsch, Lost Weekend – Citra IPA, A Little Golden Gem – Kumquat Gose, and the Full Bloom – Funky Farmhouse Ale. (I loved them all, but dang I could drink that deliciously sour A Little Golden Gem every day.) Visit their bar and restaurant in Navy Yard to try their latest offerings.

Additional thanks go to BaseCamp DC for their top-notch printing services, Johanna Ostrich for designing our exhibition program, and Jim Darling for photographing last night’s event.

Remember to sign up for our newsletter or follow us on Twitter and Facebook to hear about our other events, photography news from the D.C. area, and to be notified when our 10th (!!) annual contest opens this December. [Read more…]

Today’s Best in Show winner is the splendid “Summer Tango” by Messay Shoakena. His photo was chosen by judge Randall Scott, owner of RandallScottProjects, a contemporary fine art gallery based in Baltimore, Maryland:
