We’re planning our next photography session with Knowledge Commons DC. If you’re interested in teaching a class, please let us know!

  • Time Magazine made a nice list of Instagram accounts to follow in all 50 states. D.C. gets the shaft, as usual, as pointed out by of the many local Instagrammers worth following, Jim Darling.
  • 7:00 p.m. today is the deadline for Leica Store DC’s third annual juried exhibit.
  • The 2015 FotoWeek DC photo competition is open.
  • Manipulation has become so rampant in the World Press Photo contest – it could not award a 3rd prize in sports last year because everything besides the first and second place winners had been disqualified – the organization is soliciting feedback on how to revise the rules and jurying procedures for the 2016 contest.
  • Photography magazine PDN dedicated its entire September issue to women, inspiring the Washington Post’s In Sight blog to feature 10 photographers that their photo editors think you should know about, some of whom are featured in PDN’s issue.
  • Radio station WNYC noticed a lack of stock photography that truly captured the complex nature of a New Yorker. So they created “35 Stock Photos of Real New Yorkers Doing Things.”
  • Sometimes the best view in the house is from backstage. Klaus Frahm’s stark series “The Fourth Wall: Stages” offers an unusual perspective of empty theaters across Germany.
  • At the Bill Pickett Invitational Rodeo, black American cowboys are bucking the trend and riding for their forgotten legacy.
  • Photographer accidentally lets loose a tiger during a photo shoot in Detroit.
  • Polar bears frolic adorably in a field of pink flowers.

  • The photos that NASA’s New Horizons spacecraft took of Pluto this week were the latest in a long line of first up-close shots taken of the planets in our solar system.
  • Speaking of first shots: When Clyde Tombaugh announced that he discovered Pluto in 1930, astronomers rushed to see if they’d imaged it unknowingly. This 1909 photograph might be the first picture ever taken of the dwarf planet.
  • Thursday marked the anniversary of the 1979 uranium mill accident in Church Rock, New Mexico – the largest of its kind in US history. DC-based photographer Keith Lane reports on the incident and the legacy of uranium mining on the Navajo Nation.
  • Sustainable DC closed its Climate Photo contest last week, and now they’re asking you to vote for the winner.
  • Here’s the Leica Store DC’s Oskar Barnack Wall winning photograph for July, shot by Vania Arhipkin.
  • Newspaper sends cartoonist to Foo Fighters Concert to protest photo contract.
  • Paolo Pellizzari doesn’t make images like other sports photographers. Rather than strive to get as close as possible to the action, he tries to capture what he calls “human landscapes.”
  • In February and July of 2015, the National Museum of African American History and Culture released the first three parts in a multi-volume collection of books featuring some of the most definitive photographs that chronicle the black American experience for more than a century as part of its “Double Exposure” series.
  • While cities expand and encroach on the surrounding countryside, nature is being pushed back. These bridges, ladders and byways have been built to enable wildlife to travel safely and freely in an urbanising world.
  • The zoo in Tacoma, Washington has a quadruplet of ridiculous cute clouded leopard cubs.

Sneak Preview of Suspect Device Exhibition Video

March 4, 2015 By James Calder

“Suspect Device” opens this Friday, March 6, at Leica Store DC’s gallery with 20 photographs by Exposed alum Chris Suspect. The images in the exhibit are part of Suspect’s eponymous photobook which documents the last four years of  D.C.’s longstanding hardcore music scene.

Chris kindly shared this video with us, telling us it will appear in-store at the gallery, except without the accompanying music. We asked him to tell us how the video came about:

I wanted it to represent the photography but also to put the work into context for people wondering what the images are about by using parts of Alec MacKaye’s foreword from the book. Alec really nailed the feelings and thoughts I wanted to impart with the photographs with his words. He did a great job and I think he deserves a lot of recognition for the effort he put forth as well. The song in the video is “Graveyard” by The Suspects, a band I played in during the early to late 90’s. Grave Mistake records will be re-releasing our first record we put out over 20 years ago this year.

D.C. Streets on Film by Tim Fulmer

  • Local photographer and curator Cynthia Connolly’s series Letters on Top of Buildings has been acquired by the J. Paul Getty Museum. A print of one of these images will be part of the WPA Art Auction and Gala at one of the last exhibits at Artisphere, opening January 29.
  • Photographer Andrea Lee caught this epic battle between a seal and an octopus off Huntington Beach, California. There is no good outcome to this battle.
  • Washington City Paper announced the winners of their second annual photography contest.
  • The Leica Store DC will be hosting a book signing with Barbara Klemm before her gallery opening at the Goethe-Institut on January 14.
  • The Women Photojournalists of Washington are hosting their first of three business of photography events on Monday January 12. Photographer and author John Harrington will discuss pricing, contracts and negotiations.
  • Photographer Camilo Vergara shows how a street in Harlem has changed over 37 years.
  • The long beloved Atlantic In Focus blog has changed to The Atlantic Photo. The expanded photo section will allow for larger photos, shorter posts with one or two photos, and will continue to cover larger photo stories.
  • PDN has a great roundup of all the camera gear news and roll-outs happening at the Consumer Electronics Show.  There are plenty of drones, cameras, and gadgets to interest everyone.
  • The so called “Ansel Adams Act” has been introduced in Congress and has the huge goal of restoring the rights of photographers on public lands. We have our fingers crossed for a good outcome.
  • ASMPDC will be hosting an 8×10 next week on Tuesday January 13. Eight local photographers will spend ten minutes each discussing their work.
  • The annual National Western Stock Show hit the streets of Denver this week, and The Denver Post has some great photos. We wish there were more cattle traffic slowdowns in D.C. At least it would be more interesting than a Metro meltdown.
  • Stanley Greene created moving images of the Za’atari refugee camp in Jordan.
  • The London Zoo took stock of their animals at the turn of the new year, and the Post has some epic tiger shots in their animal gallery.
