Who among us doesn’t have — or at least desire — a coffee table full of intriguing photobooks? We invite you to come visit our “coffee table” topped with interesting books produced by local photographers next Friday, September 12, 6 to 8 p.m. Join us at the WeWork Wonder Bread location for a little beer and a little perusal; most of the artists will be on hand to chat about the book-making process and their projects.

We’ll have our Exposed publications, which feature our annual contest winners, on hand to browse and purchase, and you’ll also get to enjoy the work of the artists listed below. We’ll likely add a few more before the event, so please check back.

  • The D.C.-based team from Mambu Badu, a photography collective for self-identified women of African descent, will be there with their second anthology, Open Call.
  • Adam Ryder is currently a fellow at Hamiltonian Gallery, and recently produced Beautiful Mess, photographs taken during his four years in Rhode Island, and Selections from the Joint Photographic Survey, featuring architectural sites from antiquity in the Holy Land. Adam also works with artists to create books of their work.
  • Everitt Clark learned to use a large-format field camera in 2001. He’ll bring his 4″x5″ camera to show off, along with prints for his hoarders project that he’ll be publishing in a book soon.
  • Chris Suspect will bring a copy of his sold-out book Suspect Device, with images from the harDCore scene. His work is currently on display in the STRATA exhibit at the Leica Store.
  • Michael Andrade has produced a zine of his intense live music photographs.
  • Keith Campbell‘s photozine is titled Under Sun and Stars. It’s an 80 page volume of outdoor figure and portrait photography taken during his time living and working in Brooklyn.

Thank you to everyone who came to our 8th Annual Exposed DC opening reception at Long View Gallery last night! We thought the event was a huge success, and enjoyed meeting and talking with so many of you throughout the evening. The celebration continues to get bigger and better every year, a tribute to the 49 talented local photographers whose work we are so proud to share with such a large audience.

We hope you caught this excellent write-up about the exhibit and what we’re trying to do here at Exposed DC in today’s Washington Post Express Weekend Pass. The show is up at Long View through April 6. If you’re interested in purchasing a photo, please contact us at info[at]exposeddc.com.

We have many wonderful people to thank, including our generous sponsors.

Our guests enjoyed three of Bluejacket Brewery Navy Yard-brewed beers on tap, including their popular Forbidden Planet; Middleburg, Virginia-grown wine from Boxwood Winery; a selection of South African wines from Cavanagh Family Imports; and Brazilian wines, including a particularly delicious sparkling wine, from A&M Imports. Founding Farmers & Farmers Fishers Bakers brought our guests their mouthwatering bacon lollies, Everlasting Life Vegan Cafe dished out some wonderfully tasty soul food, Tel’Veh Wine Bar cooled us down with some lovely Mediterranean fare, and District Doughnut gave out their handcrafted mini-donuts to the first 200 guests through the door. Meanwhile, DJ Sequoia and v:shal, our long-standing Exposed DC ambiance providers, kept the room bumping.

Congrats again to our inaugural Best in Show winners, made possible by the Corcoran College of Art + Design with the help of our panel of distinguished judges, Jacquelyn Martin, Jamie Rose, Dan Westergren, Susan Sterner, Nancy Walz and Lucian Perkins.

The after party at The Passenger went well into the night with photography-themed cocktail specials (the Exposed Sparkler was the perfect way to end the evening) featuring El Buho Mezcal and Rhum Clément.

We could not have done this without additional support from D.C. institutions Washington School of Photography, Capital Photography Center, the Historical Society of Washington, D.C., and HOIST Studio, each of whom we look forward to working with again in the future.

Join Exposed DC on a Photo Walk at Union Market on Saturday

July 17, 2013 By exposeddc

"Union Market Interior" by Mr. T in DC
“Union Market Interior” by Mr. T in DC

When we launched Exposed DC in June we promised you events with a healthy  combination of alcohol and photography, and it’s time to start delivering.

Our first Exposed DC photo walk will take place this Saturday at 2 p.m. at Union Market (driving and metro directions), which re-opened in its most recent incarnation last September. We’ll gather at the tables just inside the main entrance and hang out there until about 2:15 p.m. to meet each other and wait for people to arrive. Then we’ll wander around the market, enjoying the newly renovated building and the wide variety of local vendors, snapping pics, and maybe you’ll end up taking some delicious cheeses, veggies, meats, or spices home with you. Many of us will likely stick together, but for the wanderers, let’s meet back up at the tables between 3 and 3:30 p.m. — grab some beverages or food on your way.

This is your opportunity to come out if you’ve been curious about Exposed DC or the local photography community, whether you’re carrying a vintage rangefinder or you just prefer your cameraphone. We’re a low key bunch and everyone should have a blast. Don’t forget to share your photos with everyone in our Flickr pool afterward.

Need more reasons to come? Here are five more!

  • Check out gear! Who doesn’t like gawking at cameras? We have photographers who shoot with all sorts of film and digital.
  • Explore a new place through the lens. Get to a new neighborhood and watch your creativity start working.
  • Network, aw yeah. We’re in DC…. you expected something else?! Might as well network with people who like photography.
  • Try something new. Do you shoot landscapes? Why not try street photography or portraits. Learn from each other and experiment.
  • Get out of the house for a little exercise and take pictures. Win win.

See you this Saturday at Union Market!
