Winning Photos of our 11th Annual Exposed DC Contest

January 31, 2017 By Heather Goss

We received a record number of photographs this year, thanks in part to extraordinary circumstances that extended our contest, which made it all the more difficult to suss out several dozen that would celebrate life in the nation’s capital. We’re proud to highlight images from institutions we welcomed as a city, such as the new era of organizing that the Women’s March has ushered in and the opening of the National African American Museum of History and Culture; smaller moments we reveled in like memorable art exhibits, snow days, and festivals; and then of course the subtle scenes that make every day life in D.C. such a rich experience. You’ll find the complete list of winners below. Save the date now for the opening of the Exposed DC Photography Show on March 9. We’ll have more information about our great new venue and the event details soon. New this year, we’ve partnered with FRAMEBRIDGE, a local company which will be printing and framing all the images for the show!

Some of you recently discovered Exposed DC, and we hope whether you won or not, you’ll stick around and become part of our community. Here’s how to get involved, including contributing images to our daily features, coming out to happy hours, and being part of our other programming through the year.

Join us tonight to toast to the winners at Meridian Pint in Columbia Heights at 6 p.m. Open to all photographers and photography fans. Our team will be there, so please come and say hello and help us celebrate photography in Washington, D.C.

Who among us doesn’t have — or at least desire — a coffee table full of intriguing photobooks? We invite you to come visit our “coffee table” topped with interesting books produced by local photographers next Friday, September 12, 6 to 8 p.m. Join us at the WeWork Wonder Bread location for a little beer and a little perusal; most of the artists will be on hand to chat about the book-making process and their projects.

We’ll have our Exposed publications, which feature our annual contest winners, on hand to browse and purchase, and you’ll also get to enjoy the work of the artists listed below. We’ll likely add a few more before the event, so please check back.

  • The D.C.-based team from Mambu Badu, a photography collective for self-identified women of African descent, will be there with their second anthology, Open Call.
  • Adam Ryder is currently a fellow at Hamiltonian Gallery, and recently produced Beautiful Mess, photographs taken during his four years in Rhode Island, and Selections from the Joint Photographic Survey, featuring architectural sites from antiquity in the Holy Land. Adam also works with artists to create books of their work.
  • Everitt Clark learned to use a large-format field camera in 2001. He’ll bring his 4″x5″ camera to show off, along with prints for his hoarders project that he’ll be publishing in a book soon.
  • Chris Suspect will bring a copy of his sold-out book Suspect Device, with images from the harDCore scene. His work is currently on display in the STRATA exhibit at the Leica Store.
  • Michael Andrade has produced a zine of his intense live music photographs.
  • Keith Campbell‘s photozine is titled Under Sun and Stars. It’s an 80 page volume of outdoor figure and portrait photography taken during his time living and working in Brooklyn.

Our 2014 Contest Closes Tonight!

January 8, 2014 By Heather Goss

2014_show_graphic10Just before midnight tonight is your last chance to enter our 2014 photography contest! Remember, Exposed DC is about encouraging photographers of all levels, so whether you’re a professional or just find yourself getting some great shots with your new cameraphone, we want to see your work.

The exhibit, which will open at Long View Gallery in March, will show off the life and culture of the Washington, D.C. area, with lots of great local sponsors to help us throw a blow-out party for everyone — a real celebration of photography and this city.

Real the contest rules here, send in your $10 for three entries, and stick them in our Flickr pool by 11:59 p.m. We’ll announce the winners in just one week, January 15, and later on, you’ll find out if your image also won one of our five Best in Show prizes, awarded by our special judges, which comes with a $100 cash prize.

That reminds us, it’s time to throw another happy hour! To celebrate our winners, and meet a whole new group of photographer faces that have appeared, let’s all get together:

The Hamilton
600 14th St NW (Metro Center)
Wednesday, January 15, 6 p.m.

Good luck, and we’ll see you next week!

Contest Launch Party — Thanks for Coming!

December 5, 2013 By Heather Goss

We hope folks had a blast last night at our contest launch party! It was wonderful to see so many photographer faces that we hadn’t seen in a while, and so many Exposed supporters. Bluejacket was a fantastic host – we hope you enjoyed their gorgeous renovated Navy Yard warehouse and got to try lots of their unique brews (I think the Stowaway is my favorite so far). You can look forward to more of those behind the bar at our exhibit opening reception on March 19, 2014.

As we start our 8th year, expect even more from the bigger, badder Exposed DC. Last night kicked off what will be regular monthly happy hours so that photographers can meet and mingle off-line and explore new venues in the city. Save the date for our next one on Wednesday, January 15 – the day we announce our 2014 contest winners. And we have more surprises in store for this year’s show that we’ll be announcing soon, so stay tuned!
