Exposed DC Photography Show – 15th Annual Exhibition

March 31, 2021 By Noe Todorovich

Exposed DC is excited to announce that we are partnering with Focus on the Story and Lost Origins Gallery to present the 15th annual Exposed DC Photography Show in an outdoor installation in Mount Pleasant. The exhibit will be installed on the exterior wall of Ellē restaurant at 3221 Mt Pleasant St NW. A special celebration of the 2021 Exposed DC photography show will take place on Sunday, June 6 at 3 p.m. as part of the kickoff for the fourth annual Focus on the Story International Photo Festival. Join us at the opening for a chance to win prizes from two of our sponsors.

Photo walks will take place in Mount Pleasant before the opening, and later that evening Glen Echo Photoworks will present their annual Photo Slam competition, livestreamed from Lost Origins Gallery. Exhibition magazines will be available for purchase at the opening as well as online here.

Since 2006, Exposed DC has produced our annual show to shine a spotlight on life in the D.C. metro area as seen through the lenses of some of the region’s most passionate amateur photographers and professionals alike. The show includes unique takes on the capital’s iconic locations, as well as everyday scenes captured outside of the tourist bubble. You can preview this year’s winning images here.

The outdoor exhibition will be open for all to view through Sunday, July 11. The Exposed DC team is also exploring additional, creative ways to share these images celebrating the Washington, D.C. area to ensure increased accessibility and safe opportunities to view the show. Stay tuned for updates on our events and exhibition news!

Winning images can now be viewed in our first-ever virtual gallery as well!

Exposed DC would like to thank the 2021 show partners & sponsors for their support.

The 2015 Exposed DC Winning Photographs!

January 13, 2015 By Heather Goss

ExposedDC2015ShowGraphic3

This year we celebrate our 9th annual Exposed DC Photography Show. We’ve worked hard every year to bring you the best photography that, as seen together, tells the story of living in the Washington, D.C. area. From our early days at Warehouse (RIP) to today, as we prepare to exhibit our 2015 winning images at the new Capital Fringe headquarters, we’ve been proud to feature local photographers of all levels, hobbyist to professional, who are able to see the nation’s capital as more than just a collection of monuments.

Mark your calendars for March 12, when we’ll open our 9th annual exhibit with our usual blowout bash. But tonight, January 13, join us at Meridian Pint in Columbia Heights from 6 to 8 p.m. for our monthly happy hour, to mingle and meet your fellow photographers, and this time, to toast to the following 42 winners of the 2015 contest. Congratulations!

Up this week: The Washington Post reviews our 2014 Exposed DC exhibit; animal photos – lots of them; an exploration of how a photograph can lie; and some thoughts from Getty on the relationship between photography and architecture. Happy Friday!

  • Be sure to pick up a copy of the Washington Post today to read their review of our Exposed DC show. Featured in the Weekend Section, the review is accompanied by many photos from the show.
  • Annie Leibovitz has joined twitter.
  • The National Geographic Traveler annual photo contest is now open.
  • If you enjoy dog portraits as much as we do, you will love the work of Elke Vogelsang.
  • And for the cat lovers, we have these amazing and slightly frightening cheetah photos.
  • If you like the mass hysteria of cats and dogs living together, there is the work of D.C. resident Sabrina Paige, who’s gaining popularity on Instagram for her photos of interspecies cuddling.
  • A former trash collector has amassed a large collection of World War II photographs, all of which he saved from the garbage.
  • “Sometimes, I feel that we photographers forget how much power that we wield, not only with our images, but, also, with the words that we write to accompany our photography.” Chicago Tribune photographer Scott Strazzante, who was at the game where Journal Star photographer Ron Johnson took an image of high school basketball player “flipping off the crowd,” explains that photographs aren’t always what they seem.
  • The National Academy of Sciences will be hosting two photography shows and receptions. The first is Caleb Cain’s A Portrait of Ice and the second is Nests by Sharon Beals.
  • When the Sand Creatures wage their war, we are all doomed. Beautiful work by Claire Droppert.
  • VII Photo Agency announced the five new photographers in their mentor program.
  • The story of photographer Vivian Maier is familiar to many in the photography world, but now her story is hitting the big screen in the documentary “Finding Vivian Maier.” It opens in D.C. at Landmark E Street Cinema on April 25.
  • Who says there isn’t money in photography? George J. Rosa III, the former owner of the Hallmark Institute for Photography plead guilty to charges of bank fraud and tax evasion after stealing $2.6 million in school money.
  • Reuters announced the launch of a new photo and video service this week.
  • Just when you thought this post couldn’t possibly have any more animals photos, we share the work of Ernest Goh. His chicken beauty pageant photos are going viral, but all of his work is worth seeing.
  • The New York Times Lens Blog wrote about the American Cool Exhibit on display now at the National Portrait Gallery.
  • Self Magazine requested to use the photo of a female runner dressed as Wonder Woman taken during the LA Marathon. The woman agreed, and Self proceeded to mock the woman’s outfit in the magazine. Turns out the woman wore the outfit because it was her first marathon since she started chemo for brain cancer.
  • The Getty Museum explores the relationship between architecture and photography.
  • The Oregon Zoo lost their female Amur tiger this week after she suffered a seizure.

2014 Best In Show: Armando Gallardo

March 17, 2014 By Meaghan Gay

1+1 by Armando Gallardo
1+1 by Armando Gallardo

Last but not least, the final winner of our inaugural Best In Show prize for the 8th annual Exposed DC Photography Show. We invited a panel of six distinguished Washington-area photojournalists to pick, in their esteemed opinion, their favorite photograph from our group of 49 images. Each Best In Show winner receives a $100 prize made possible by the Corcoran College of Art + Design.

Corcoran College of Art and Design

Tickets for the show, which opens next Wednesday, March 19, are available now.

Today’s Best in Show image is “1+1” by Armando Gallardo. Congrats Armando! His photo was chosen by judge Susan Sterner, Chair of the Master of Arts program in New Media Photojournalism at the Corcoran College of Art and Design

Exposed: Can you describe the scene, and where you were when you took this photo?

Gallardo: I took this photo at the Sweetlife Festival in 2013. I was sent to the Meriweather Pavillion, where it usually takes place, by The Huffington Post to try to capture all the fun moments, craziness and unexpected insanity that comes with this kind of summer festival.

Exposed: The couple is clearly not worried about the crowd around them, did they have any idea you took the picture? Did they have any reaction?

Gallardo: Well, I had just gotten there when out of nowhere the sky turned gray and it started pouring rain. As I ran for cover, I saw this couple passionately kissing on the floor without really caring about anybody, so I took one shot and kept running for cover.

To this day I don’t know who they are so I started a website Finding John and Jane Doe to see if we can reach out to the internet and see if anybody recognizes them. I’m hoping to find them and get them a print.

Exposed: How did you decide to enter this photo in the contest? What made you select this shot?

Gallardo: I entered last year and got in with a photo of a protest in downtown D.C. I gave it a shot this year and got in again, which was pleasantly surprising.

This shot embodies what everybody’s teenage years looked like, and how much disregard there is for everything we do when ‘love is in the air’.

You can see more of Gallardo’s work on his website. His winning photo is also the cover of our exhibition program.
