Special Judges for the 2015 Exposed DC Photography Show

January 20, 2015 By Heather Goss

ExposedDC2015ShowGraphic3

We loved being able to reward a few talented photographers with a special award last year, granted by some of the most distinguished photographers in the D.C. area, so we’re doing it again!

This year our judges are photojournalists, fine artists, and picture editors, have images held in the private collections from the Getty to the Smithsonian, seen their work regularly published in The New York Times and by the Associated Press, and won armfuls of awards and fellowships. They’re already looking at the winning 42 images to find their favorites. Each winning photographer will get a $100 cash prize from Exposed DC.

Will the discerning eye of one of our judges pick yours? We’ll announce the winners just before the exhibit opens on March 12.

Now, meet our special judges: Lauren Stockbower, Cynthia Connolly, Randall Scott, Susana Raab, and Evan Vucci.

The 2015 Exposed DC Winning Photographs!

January 13, 2015 By Heather Goss

ExposedDC2015ShowGraphic3

This year we celebrate our 9th annual Exposed DC Photography Show. We’ve worked hard every year to bring you the best photography that, as seen together, tells the story of living in the Washington, D.C. area. From our early days at Warehouse (RIP) to today, as we prepare to exhibit our 2015 winning images at the new Capital Fringe headquarters, we’ve been proud to feature local photographers of all levels, hobbyist to professional, who are able to see the nation’s capital as more than just a collection of monuments.

Mark your calendars for March 12, when we’ll open our 9th annual exhibit with our usual blowout bash. But tonight, January 13, join us at Meridian Pint in Columbia Heights from 6 to 8 p.m. for our monthly happy hour, to mingle and meet your fellow photographers, and this time, to toast to the following 42 winners of the 2015 contest. Congratulations!

Thank you to everyone who came to our 8th Annual Exposed DC opening reception at Long View Gallery last night! We thought the event was a huge success, and enjoyed meeting and talking with so many of you throughout the evening. The celebration continues to get bigger and better every year, a tribute to the 49 talented local photographers whose work we are so proud to share with such a large audience.

We hope you caught this excellent write-up about the exhibit and what we’re trying to do here at Exposed DC in today’s Washington Post Express Weekend Pass. The show is up at Long View through April 6. If you’re interested in purchasing a photo, please contact us at info[at]exposeddc.com.

We have many wonderful people to thank, including our generous sponsors.

Our guests enjoyed three of Bluejacket Brewery Navy Yard-brewed beers on tap, including their popular Forbidden Planet; Middleburg, Virginia-grown wine from Boxwood Winery; a selection of South African wines from Cavanagh Family Imports; and Brazilian wines, including a particularly delicious sparkling wine, from A&M Imports. Founding Farmers & Farmers Fishers Bakers brought our guests their mouthwatering bacon lollies, Everlasting Life Vegan Cafe dished out some wonderfully tasty soul food, Tel’Veh Wine Bar cooled us down with some lovely Mediterranean fare, and District Doughnut gave out their handcrafted mini-donuts to the first 200 guests through the door. Meanwhile, DJ Sequoia and v:shal, our long-standing Exposed DC ambiance providers, kept the room bumping.

Congrats again to our inaugural Best in Show winners, made possible by the Corcoran College of Art + Design with the help of our panel of distinguished judges, Jacquelyn Martin, Jamie Rose, Dan Westergren, Susan Sterner, Nancy Walz and Lucian Perkins.

The after party at The Passenger went well into the night with photography-themed cocktail specials (the Exposed Sparkler was the perfect way to end the evening) featuring El Buho Mezcal and Rhum Clément.

We could not have done this without additional support from D.C. institutions Washington School of Photography, Capital Photography Center, the Historical Society of Washington, D.C., and HOIST Studio, each of whom we look forward to working with again in the future.

March 17, 2014 By Meaghan Gay

1+1 by Armando Gallardo
1+1 by Armando Gallardo

Last but not least, the final winner of our inaugural Best In Show prize for the 8th annual Exposed DC Photography Show. We invited a panel of six distinguished Washington-area photojournalists to pick, in their esteemed opinion, their favorite photograph from our group of 49 images. Each Best In Show winner receives a $100 prize made possible by the Corcoran College of Art + Design.

Corcoran College of Art and Design

Tickets for the show, which opens next Wednesday, March 19, are available now.

Today’s Best in Show image is “1+1” by Armando Gallardo. Congrats Armando! His photo was chosen by judge Susan Sterner, Chair of the Master of Arts program in New Media Photojournalism at the Corcoran College of Art and Design

Exposed: Can you describe the scene, and where you were when you took this photo?

Gallardo: I took this photo at the Sweetlife Festival in 2013. I was sent to the Meriweather Pavillion, where it usually takes place, by The Huffington Post to try to capture all the fun moments, craziness and unexpected insanity that comes with this kind of summer festival.

Exposed: The couple is clearly not worried about the crowd around them, did they have any idea you took the picture? Did they have any reaction?

Gallardo: Well, I had just gotten there when out of nowhere the sky turned gray and it started pouring rain. As I ran for cover, I saw this couple passionately kissing on the floor without really caring about anybody, so I took one shot and kept running for cover.

To this day I don’t know who they are so I started a website Finding John and Jane Doe to see if we can reach out to the internet and see if anybody recognizes them. I’m hoping to find them and get them a print.

Exposed: How did you decide to enter this photo in the contest? What made you select this shot?

Gallardo: I entered last year and got in with a photo of a protest in downtown D.C. I gave it a shot this year and got in again, which was pleasantly surprising.

This shot embodies what everybody’s teenage years looked like, and how much disregard there is for everything we do when ‘love is in the air’.

You can see more of Gallardo’s work on his website. His winning photo is also the cover of our exhibition program.
