2015 Best in Show Winner: Diriki Rice

March 7, 2015 By exposeddc

Diriki Rice - Oi Vape
Oi Vape by Diriki Rice

And now for the second of our five Best In Show prize winners from the 9th annual Exposed DC Photography Show. We invited each member of a panel of distinguished D.C. metro-area editors and photojournalists to choose their favorite photograph from the 42 in this year’s exhibit. The five winning photographers will each receive a $100 cash prize from Exposed DC.

We’ll be announcing the winners each day through next Tuesday. Advance tickets are still available for the opening reception this Thursday, March 12.

Today’s Best in Show winner is the striking “Oi Vape” by Diriki Rice. Congratulations Diriki! His photo was chosen by judge Lauren Stockbower, a veteran picture editor, photojournalist and educator in the D.C. area:

An intriguing portrait of a skater, whose face is only partially visible because of the long, twirling, and mysterious cloud of –vapor. The shadowy graffiti-laden background at the Bridge Skate Park in SW adds to the mood. Vaping looks way cool.

2015 Best in Show Winner: Kashif Javaid

March 6, 2015 By exposeddc

Kashif Javaid - This reminded me of Diane Arbus
This reminded me of Diane Arbus by Kashif Javaid

We debuted Best in Show awards last year and they proved to be such a popular addition to the contest, we were eager to bring them back for our 9th annual Exposed DC Photography Show. Of the 42 photographs in this year’s exhibit, five have been recognized by a panel of distinguished D.C. metro-area editors and photojournalists. The five winning photographers will each receive a $100 cash prize from Exposed DC.

We’ll be announcing the winners daily through next Tuesday.

This year’s first Best in Show recipient is the superb “This reminded me of Diane Arbus” by Kashif Javaid. Well done Kashif! His photo was chosen by judge Susana Raab, a fine-art and documentary photographer working in Washington, D.C. She told us (before she know what Kashif titled it):

I selected this image because of its simplicity and the unusualness of the moment found within an everyday scene.  I love how the awkwardness of the girl’s arms caught inside her coat and the gesture of her hands over her eyes creates an allegorical image – a blank canvas ripe for projection.  The photograph has a Diane Arbusian appeal within its discomfort and tension.  I think the photographer was successful in transforming the ordinary into an iconic image. IDC2014winners

A huge thanks to the hundreds of local photographers that submitted their images to our InstantDC Open Call, our first project teamed up with the IDC crew.

We’ve been working hard with judges Keith Lane and E. Brady Robinson to select the top images for the exhibit at the Washington School of Photography, which is graciously hosting a free opening night celebration in their huge gallery space on October 3, and showcasing the exhibition for an entire month! We’re still sorting out the opening night arrangements, so more on that later.

Congratulations to our winners, whose names and winning photographs can be found after the jump. You’ll be notified by email with more instructions soon! The Best in Show selections will be announced closer to the show, so stay tuned for that too.

If you are interested in sponsoring the InstantDC 2014 Show, it’s not too late! Email us at info[at]exposeddc.com for more information.

Share What You Know Through Exposed DC

July 1, 2014 By Heather Goss

logo_reversedExposed has always considered its mission to connect photographers with opportunities. Our next project will do that two-fold: Giving skilled photographers an opportunity to learn how to teach others, and giving very new photographers a place to learn something new about taking images.

Let’s start with the teachers. (We mean you, so keep reading.) Each of us loves a certain thing about photography that we do all the time. It might be taking pictures of all the luscious things at the farmers market every Sunday morning, or developing your own film, or setting up a tripod at sunset for that perfect Harvest moon photo.

Exposed DC wants you to share that thing you love. We plan to sponsor some classes through Knowledge Commons DC, a “free school for thinkers, doers, and tinkerers — taught anywhere, by anyone, for everyone.” These classes let people in D.C. share their passions with others. In the spring semester, you could sign up for a class on anything from Small Scale Urban Composting, to Intro to American Whiskey, to a seminar on Bruce Springsteen’s “Nebraska” or the lesser known monuments in D.C.

You can teach one of these! You don’t have to be an expert, just a person who’s practiced something enough to give others some great pointers. Our team brainstormed some ideas of skills we’ve seen our photographers display:

  • Taking great pictures of food
  • Techniques at Gravelly Point to catch the airplanes
  • How to make a pinhole camera
  • Macro photos of flowers (teach your class in a public garden!)
  • Working with flash / natural light / low light
  • Working with wide lenses or fisheyes
  • Experimenting with focal length / panning
  • Making sunprints
  • Night sky photography
  • How to market yourself as a freelance photographer

The classes can take place just about anywhere, classrooms or out in the field. They can be highly specific! (KCDC once had a class on manscaping your beard!) Never taught a class? That’s great – you’re the ones we’re looking for! Exposed will help you with as much as you need: Finding a venue, creating an outline, getting any supplies, and of course, promoting the class. You can also limit your class size to whatever you’re comfortable with.

It’s okay if you only have a vague idea; we can help you figure out exactly what the subject can be. The classes will be taught in the fall semester, and we’re open to sponsoring more than one class. We need to know in the next few weeks if you’re interested, but we’ll have a few months to get everything ready.

Interested? Drop us a line!
