Last Thursday night photographer Michael Andrade opened his photography show In My Eyes at The Coupe in Columbia Heights. We’re familiar with Andrade’s intense concert images, as he was part of the Instant DC collective which joined our team at Exposed a few weeks ago. He’s been following and photographing bands from D.C., Maryland, and Virginia.

You can enjoy his work, along with paintings inspired by Andrade’s work by street artist Rose Jaffe, in the coffee shop and bar section of the venue through September 1. We asked Andrade a few questions about his photography:

UPDATE: We’ve announced the winners!

Starting right out of the gates after joining Exposed DC, Instant DC is launching an open call for photography by D.C.-area photographers starting now through September 1, 2014.

We are partnering with the Washington School of Photography, which is graciously hosting a free opening night celebration October 3, and showcasing the exhibition for an entire month. More details about the opening night soon.

Highlights and rules for submitting:

1. Exposed DC, Instant DC, and the Washington School of Photography will print, frame, and hang your image(s) should they be selected, so all you have to do is pay the submission fee of $25 for up to 4 images. You may submit an unlimited number of batches at 4 for $25.

2. Selections will be chosen by a panel of judges including photography professor E. Brady Robinson and photojournalist Keith Lane. All judging is blind, winners will be notified after the judging process is over, in early September 2014.

3. Submit your best photographs. While you need to be a resident of the Washington D.C. metro area, there is no category delimiter, geographic requirement, or theme for this call, each piece will be judged on its own artistic merit, as with past Exposed DC shows.

4. Images must be at least 1024 pixels on the shortest side. Your image may be disqualified if you cannot provide a high enough resolution image for printing and framing.

5. All framed works will be on sale for $250 at the exhibition, this will be a great opportunity to support local photographers and take home a unique one-of-a-kind piece of art. The Washington School of Photography and Exposed DC will share 40% commission on sales.

6. Prizes will go to the first, second, and third place winners, with five honorable mentions. Prizes may be both sponsored gifts as well as monetary up to $500 in value.

So what are you waiting for? Good luck!

InstantDC Joins Exposed DC

June 26, 2014 By Heather Goss

idcIn a city as transient as D.C. it’s not unusual to watch ideas and groups flit in and out of existence, but some of them make their mark. We’ve followed Instant DC since they started their group focused on mobile photography in 2010 with much interest. They’ve run successful projects from independent exhibits in coordination with groups like STRATA, to managing the local photography section of FotoDC last year. Led by James Campbell, Instant DC boasts some incredible local talent, including photographers featured by Exposed many times, like Emily Reid Campbell, Keith Lane, Michael Andrade, Jim Darling, Noe Todorovich, and Patrick Onofre.

That’s why we’re incredibly happy to announce that the Instant DC collective has become part of Exposed DC today. Their writers and photographers will be featuring the best in mobile photography right here on the site (which will see some big changes in the coming months). We’ll also be coordinating some of their upcoming exhibits – tune in next Wednesday for an announcement of an exciting local contest!

If you’re one of Instant DC’s many fans, we hope you’ll follow us on Twitter and Facebook, and keep in touch with our monthly newsletter featuring the artist interviews and gear talk and whatever else we post to the website. We meet up for a monthly happy hour, and have some other exciting events in the works soon. Let’s have James Campbell tell us what’s in store:

I have been extremely lucky to have the opportunity of launching a brand like Instant DC and watch it take on a life of its own over the past 3 years. Believe it or not, we had DC’s first mobile photography exhibition back before Instagram even existed. Becoming part of an organization like Exposed DC is the next logical step in my mind. We will now be able to help Exposed DC curate great mobile photography and highlight trends in the social / connected photography arena. I believe firmly in Exposed DC’s mission of featuring and enabling emerging photographers in the local area and look forward to continuing to plan periodic exhibitions and creative happenings under the Exposed DC banner.
