2018 Best in Show Winner: Miki Jourdan

May 9, 2018 By Noe Todorovich

Miki Jourdan – Resist

Today we announce the fifth and final Best in Show prize winner from the 12th Annual Exposed DC Photography Show, which opens this Friday. We invited a panel of five distinguished photographers to each choose a favorite image from this year’s exhibit to be awarded a Best in Show award. Each winning photographer will receive a $100 cash prize, sponsored by Union 206 Studio.

Advance tickets for our May 11 opening night are still available, so don’t delay!

Now without further ado, the fifth Best in Show winning photo is “Resist” by Miki Jourdan, selected by judge Marvin Joseph. Joseph wrote, “I really liked the darkness and saturated color and ghost white bonnets that the ladies wore. Definitely reminded me of imagery from the tv show The Handmaid’s Tale.” It definitely reminds me of the show as well, and I love stark contrast and how it almost looks like the group is illuminated by a spotlight, creating a very dramatic vibe.

You can see more of Jourdan’s photographs on Instagram.

His photographs were also a part of “Coming Home a Different Person,” which earned the Documentary Project of the Year Award from POYi, and a Pulitzer Prize finalist documenting Specialist Robert Warren, a soldier who returned from Afghanistan with a traumatic brain injury.

2018 Best in Show Winner: Marci Lindsay

Marci Lindsay – Market Vendor’s Assistant

Today we have the fourth Best in Show prize winner from the 12th Annual Exposed DC Photography Show. A panel of five distinguished photographers was invited to choose their favorite image from this year’s exhibit to be awarded a Best in Show award. Each winning photographer will receive a $100 cash prize, sponsored by Union 206 Studio.

For our third winning photo we have “Market Vendor’s Assistant” by Marci Lindsay, selected by judge Carolyn Russo. Russo wrote, “The colors, cropped elements, and sense of mystery in this scene remind me of an Edward Hopper painting.” I love the connection Russo makes here. I also find mysel drawn into the image by the lack of a person in the frame while the dog stares intently forward. Maybe it’s that along with the cropped elements that adds intrigue to this scene…making me wonder what is happening all around the photographer in this very moment.

You can see more of Lindsay’s photographs on Instagram.

Carolyn Russo is a museum specialist, photographer, and co-curator for the art collection at the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum. She is the author of four books: Art of the Airport Tower (Smithsonian Books, Fall 2015), In Plane View: Abstractions of Flight (powerHouse Books, 2007), Artifacts of Flight (Harry N. Abrams, 2003), and Women and Flight: Portraits of Contemporary Women Pilots (Bulfinch Press, 1997). She has curated several exhibitions and her photographs have been widely exhibited in the United States, China, and Finland.

Mac Blessen – Untitled

Today we have the third Best in Show prize winner from the 12th Annual Exposed DC Photography Show, which opens this Friday night. Five distinguished photographers were each invited to choose a favorite image from this year’s exhibit to be awarded a Best in Show award. Each winning photographer will receive a $100 cash prize, sponsored by Union 206 Studio. Advanced tickets for our opening reception are still available, so grab yours now to see all 40 images in the exhibit, meet featured photographers, and celebrate local photography with us.

For our third winning photo we have “Untitled” by Mac Blessen, selected by judge Sanjay Suchak. Suchak wrote, “It’s a quintessential street photo in my opinion. One that calls to mind a classic Robert Frank image from the book ‘The Americans.’ He had an appreciation for photographing scenes where the subject’s face is obscured. I just love thinking about what the story is behind this image and the occasional awkwardness that occurs when people work together.”

You can see more of Blessen’s photographs on his website.

Sanjay Suchak  is an award-winning and Emmy-nominated photographer and multimedia storyteller based in Charlottesville, Virginia and working around the world. Kattie Angelita Delcid – Attitude After School

Today we announce the second Best in Show prize winner from the 12th Annual Exposed DC Photography Show. The Best in Show winners were selected by a panel of five distinguished photographers who each chose their favorite image from this year’s exhibit. Each winning photographer will receive a $100 cash prize, sponsored by Union 206 Studio.

For our second winning photo we have “Attitude After School” by Kattie Angelita Delcid, selected by judge Nancy Walz. Walz wrote, “This shot stands out for having beautifully captured an ordinary moment — the intensity of one boy’s stare next to the relaxed shrug of his friend. The nuanced space between them creates a clean, powerful composition. And there’s a story behind the photo — I wonder what’s going on and what are they up to next.”

You can see more of Delcid’s photographs on her website.

Nancy Walz is a freelance photo editor in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. It is layered in such a way that you can study it for a long time exploring the many emotions within this one image.”

You can see more of Nizborski’s photographs on her website.
