2018 Best in Show Winner: Kattie Angelita Delcid

May 3, 2018 By Noe Todorovich

Kattie Angelita Delcid – Attitude After School

Today we announce the second Best in Show prize winner from the 12th Annual Exposed DC Photography Show. The Best in Show winners were selected by a panel of five distinguished photographers who each chose their favorite image from this year’s exhibit. Each winning photographer will receive a $100 cash prize, sponsored by Union 206 Studio.

For our second winning photo we have “Attitude After School” by Kattie Angelita Delcid, selected by judge Nancy Walz. Walz wrote, “This shot stands out for having beautifully captured an ordinary moment — the intensity of one boy’s stare next to the relaxed shrug of his friend. The nuanced space between them creates a clean, powerful composition. And there’s a story behind the photo — I wonder what’s going on and what are they up to next.”

You can see more of Delcid’s photographs on her website.

Nancy Walz is a freelance photo editor in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. She previously directed the still photography team at Discovery Communications, producing award-winning work for networks including the Discovery Channel, Animal Planet, TLC, and the Oprah Winfrey Network. As a photojournalist in Seattle and Spain, she covered news and feature stories, and also worked as staff photographer for Wesleyan University in Connecticut. She has been a contest judge and portfolio reviewer for a variety of organizations.

Erika Nizborski – Senate Hearing On Healthcare

Friday, May 11 is the opening night for our 12th Annual Exposed DC Photography Show. Discounted advance tickets are available now, so grab yours soon! Every year we ask a panel of five distinguished, local judges to select one image each for a Best in Show award. The winning photographers each receive a $100 cash prize; this year the award is sponsored by Union 206 Studio. We’ll be announcing the 2018 Best in Show winners over the next couple of days, starting right now!

First up, we have “Senate Hearing On Healthcare” by Erika Nizborski, selected by judge Lucian Perkins. Lucian stated, “I love this image. It has everything going for it—a moment frozen in time that tells a story within the confines of the image and most likely historically as well. It is layered in such a way that you can study it for a long time exploring the many emotions within this one image.”

You can see more of Nizborski’s photographs on her website.

Lucian Perkins is a two-time Pulitzer Prize-winning photojournalist, who worked for over twenty years as a staff photographer for The Washington Post. He was named Newspaper Photographer of the Year by the National Press Photographers Association in 1994, and he was awarded the coveted World Press Photo of the Year in 1996. His Pulitzer Prizes were won during his tenure with The Washington Post for his work on poverty in the U.S. and the conflict in Kosovo. Currently, he is an independent photographer and videographer concentrating on multimedia projects and documentaries.

Did you get your tickets for the opening of our 12th annual Exposed DC Photography Show yet? Grab them now and mark your calendars for Friday, May 11 to join the party and see the 40 winning photographs displayed and projected throughout the Dupont Underground!

  • Head to the opening reception this Sunday for “Space Around Us” at GlenEcho Photoworks, featuring photography by Ira Tattleman. 4 to 6 p.m.
  • Last August, photojournalist Ryan Kelly stopped by a Charlottesville rally on his last day in the newsroom before starting a job doing social media for a brewery. On Monday, he won a Pulitzer for the harrowing photo he took that day.
  • Stock photography has long lacked diversity, but it looks like people are starting to focus on changing that, from Karen Okonokwo co-creating TONL to Bex Day’s efforts that we shared in a previous Friday Links. Hopefully, this trend continues.
  • A new book takes a nostalgic look at New York’s subway through the eyes of legendary photographer Helen Levitt.
  • Amateur artists 50 and over who live in Maryland, D.C. or Virginia are invited to enter the Beacon Celebration of the Arts competition. Winners will receive awards, cash prizes (up to $100), as well as public showings of their works, including the opportunity to exhibit at one or more area galleries. $10/entry, deadline: June 29.
  • Chilean photojournalist Pilar Vergara’s new book due out next month aims to “capture transgender woman as they are – not as photographers often depict them.”
  • A new camera developed by NASA can image underwater coral reefs from space by using “fluid lensing” technology.
  • The Washington Post announced the winners of its annual squirrel photo contest (yes, that’s a thing!), and Exposed regular Angela Napili took third place.
  • A new KFC ad campaign “photoshopped pieces of fried chicken into photos to make them look like fiery explosions and smoke/vapor plumes” and it’s kind of perfect.
