In Frame: Best of 2016

January 4, 2017 By Caroline Space

HAPPY 2017, friends!

It’s been a wonderful year in image making. I’ve seen hundreds of extraordinary images on our Flickr page and our #exposeddc Instagram tag. Photography is my life and I’m so grateful to share it with all of you.

It was such a difficult task to select my 10 favorite In Frames of from 2016, but ultimately these images are the ones with which I really felt a special connection. I’m looking forward to seeing what you all enter into the 11th annual ExposedDC photography contest–enter your best work showcasing life in the metro area before January 11. And keep making pictures–I cannot wait to see what you create this year!

All my best,

Caroline

John Benevelli captures the eerie banality of the office space. Empty chairs display the direction in which they last swiveled, the florescent lights remain lit, and it seems as though data streams through the cords to the ceiling in this abandoned space. It’s a sad reality that the office space is where we dwell most, but maybe these people got a chance to break free.

When I first saw this image by John Benevelli, I imagined that the Army men were holding the colorful strings of balloons. I know they are not, but still this image makes me smile–what a nice capture.

Another wonderful minimal architectural scene brought to you by John Benevelli. I find comfort in the sharp angles of any geometric space—real or imagined. I find corners to be a symbolic reminder that there is perfection in a worn, seemingly unimportant environment, making them worth looking at.

We see our fair share of long exposures in the Exposed DC Flickr pool, the vast majority of which are shot in low light. John Benevelli – whose nocturnal long exposure was selected for our InstantDC Fall Review – has bucked the trend with these Marine Corps Marathon images, shot in full daylight and producing a gorgeous, wave-like effect.
