Join us, Focus on the Story, and Photoworks this Sunday at 6:30 p.m. at metrobar for happy hour before Photo Slam 2022. Stick around for the live photo competition with images projected on the big screen. This year’s judges are Farrah Skeiky, Sharon Farmer, Lou Jacobson, and our very own Noe Todorovich. They’ll be reviewing the submissions live with host and national poetry slam winner, Regie Cabico, as photographers compete to win a 2023 gallery show at Photoworks at Glen Echo Park.

  • The request for applications to the FY23 Art Bank Program from the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities closes today at 4 p.m.
  • Summer of StreetMeet closes this weekend with an edit and chill meet on Sunday at Dew Drop Inn.
  • Claudio Contreras Koob has been obsessed with flamingos since he was four years old and is sharing his passion in a new photography book.
  • Saatchi Art announced a jury-curated NFT auction featuring works by 50 fine art photographers.
  • Adobe recently announced various Lightroom and Photoshop features, and it looks like Photoshop on the Web will be free for everyone in the future.

  • Just a few days left to submit work to take part in Photo Slam 2022. Photos submitted will be projected at metrobar on June 26 during the live slam hosted by Regie Cabico with judges Noe Todorovich, Farrah Skeiky, Lou Jacobson, and Sharon Farmer.
  • Katie Dance and John Scharbach will be hosting an introductory zine workshop tomorrow at the Eaton Workshop between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Attendees are strongly encouraged to bring a collection of work to layout and bind.
  • Chanelle Smith-Walker, the team photographer for the Carolina Panthers, shares about her experience in the Next Woman Up series from the NFL.
  • Jarob Ortiz, a large format photographer for the National Park Service, has a solo show opening on June 23 at Chevy Chase Pavilion, 6-9 p.m. “The Echoes of Ellis Island” features images taken from 2016 and 2018 as part of a Historic American Buildings Survey project.
  • The finalist preview for the Bird Photographer of the Year 2022 has been released.
  • The Washington Post has been exploring the storied history of Steuart Building at Fifth and K Streets NW that housed the CIA’s National Photographic Interpretation Center from 1956 to 1963.
  • Winners and finalists of the 2022 BigPicture Natural World Photography Competition have been announced.
  • Vienna’s Leitz Photographica Auctions sold a camera previously owned by the man who invented 35mm photography for over $15 million.

Thank you so much to everyone who joined us at the opening of our annual photography show at Lost Origins Outside last weekend! If you missed it, we shared an opening reception recap with some photos from the event, information about the exhibition, and a brief survey for attendees who’d like to provide feedback on the event. You can also view our virtual gallery and listen to some of the photographers talk about their images in the show. Our #2022XDC Instagram giveaway runs through June 30, so you still have time to check out the exhibition and participate. Our team is so grateful to everyone who helped make this show possible and to everyone who’s taking the time to come and see it!

  • Focus on the Story has a full day of events lined up for tomorrow, including the festival kick-off party where the 2022 Exposed DC Photography Show will be projected, 7-9 p.m., free. Register and show your ticket for two free drink coupons. And be sure to check the full calendar for events all through the month!
  • Photoworks is hosting an in-person reception tomorrow for their exhibit featuring the winners of Photo Slam 2021: Shelby Swann and Kristian Whipple, 4:00-6:00 p.m.
  • And be sure to save the date for Photo Slam 2022 on June 26 at metrobar and submit your own images by June 20 to participate and vie for an exhibition at Photoworks Gallery in 2023.
  • Head to metrobar this Sunday from 5:00-8:00 p.m. for the opening of “A Long Way Down: The Grandeur, Grit and Humanity of the DC Metro,” an exhibit featuring local photographers who captured great images of the ubiquitous DC Metro system. We spy several Exposed alum in the list of featured photographers; congrats, all!
  • German film manufacturer Orwo is launching a new ISO 500 color film based on Agfa film stock used in the movie “Out of Africa.”
  • Summer of StreetMeet kicks off tomorrow in Rosslyn, with meet-ups happening every Saturday in June at various locations.
  • Join Erica Robinson and Jamie Rose for a golden hour photo walk with Tamron & Wildfire tonight, 6:00 p.m., free, with lenses available to borrow during the walk.
  • Getty Images announced a $40,000 creative grant to encourage authentic representation of disability communities.
  • Mac Cosgrove-Davies is offering two hands-on, one-week camps at Photoworks for teens (age 13-18): “Handmade Photography – Camera to Final Print” and “Exploring the Cyanotype” in late June and early July, $200/camp.

Just over a week until the 2022 Exposed DC Photography Show opens at Lost Origins Outside in Mount Pleasant! Join us for a special celebration to kick off the show on Sunday, May 29 from 3-6 p.m. Whether you join for the opening or visit during the exhibit run, we invite you to share an image on Instagram and tag #2022XDC, @exposed_dc, and @capitalphotographycenter in the caption to take part in our giveaway.   • We’ll be announcing the Best in Show winners of this year’s show next week. Get to know our awesome judges and then check back to see which images took home their votes!
  • The 2022 Pulitzer Prize winners and finalists have been announced. Special shout out to our Best in Show judges Michael McCoy and Kenny Holston who were part of the New York Times team that won the National Reporting category.
  • Join Leica for a conversation with Cheriss May (another one of our guest judges!) next Thursday at 4 p.m., free, online.
  • The first ever global music photography competition, Abbey Road Studios Music Photography Awards, announced this year’s winners with the Zeitgeist category going to none other than Chris Suspect. An Exposed alum, you’ll likely recognize his name and work, and you can see two of his images in our show this year too.
  • Join Critical Exposure for “Shutter Speed: How We’re Living Now” on Thursday, June 2 to see and hear the unique perspective of D.C. youth on how they’re living inside of new norms and grappling to make sense of what has been, what is, and what will be.
  • The Event Horizon Telescope produced images of two black holes now, with scientists dreaming of movies next.
  • The DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities issued a request for applications from qualified artists and District nonprofit art galleries or organizations for its Fiscal Year 2023 Art Bank Program with a deadline of June 24. There’s also a curatorial grant program with a deadline of July 8.
  • Join Focus on the Story for the Visual Storytelling Summit on June 4 at the Eaton Hotel for a day full of celebrating emerging voices. All events are free but require registration.
