Announcing the 2014 Exposed DC Contest Winners

January 15, 2014 By exposeddc

2014_show_graphic10We hoped that the many supporters in the photography community we’ve cultivated over the years would follow us when we decided to launch Exposed DC on its own, as a year-round entity. We’re relieved to say: Boy did you ever! A contest with over 200 contestants and 560 entries can be a tough one to judge, but our team had an amazing time going through all your visions of Washington area life and culture. Our sincere thanks to everyone who participated, and we hope you’ll keep up with us throughout the year.

Before we get too far: Don’t forget to join us tonight for our January meetup, and to celebrate our 2014 winners, at The Hamilton at 6 p.m. We hope to see lots of new faces!

Yes, the winners of our contest, which will be exhibited in the 8th annual Exposed DC Photography Show, are after the jump. Congratulations to those chosen this year; you’ll be notified by email with more instructions soon. Your photos are now in the hands of our team of special judges: Lucian Perkins, Jacquelyn Martin, Dan Westergren, Nancy Walz, and Jamie Rose. Five of you will win their Best in Show award, which comes with a $100 cash prize sponsored by the Corcoran College of Art + Design. Focused on the idea of direct and intensely creative education, the Corcoran College of Art + Design is the only accredited college of art and design in the museum and college-rich environment of Washington, D.C. We’ll announce these prizes closer to the show.

Exposed DC 2014 Contest Sponsors

The Exposed DC Photography Show will open on March 19, 2014 at the newly renovated Long View Gallery, and we’ll take over all 9,000 square feet with our celebration of Washington, D.C. You’ll enjoy featured beers from the new and already highly praised Bluejacket DC, made onsite at their Navy Yard warehouse. Grab a selection of tasty snacks from local restaurants, including Founding Farmers and Farmers Fishers Bakers, dedicated to eco-friendly and sustainable dining, and mouthwatering flavors from Tel’Veh Wine Bar‘s Executive Chef Dimo Kolouas. Our popular table-turner is back again this year, so you can enjoy all this goodness with mood-setting music from DJ Sequoia and v:shal kanwar.

The fun doesn’t end at the gallery this year. After you’re done gazing at all the art you can handle, walk a couple blocks over to The Passenger, which is hosting our first-ever afterparty in their theater.

Additional and much appreciated support for the Exposed DC Photography Show comes from some D.C. area businesses that have helped build up the photography scene that exists today:

  • The Washington School of Photography in Rockville, Md. offers classes, workshops, professional programs, as well as regular events, and all the facilities a photographer could need.
  • The Capital Photography Center offers classes with tons of individual attention and hands-on experience in the field.
  • HOIST Studio in Fairfax, Va. offers rental space and hosts resident photographers who use the studio as their private workspace.
  • The Historical Society of Washington, D.C. collects, interprets, and shares the history of our nation’s capital, including over 100,000 historic images of Washington. They also photography workshops and neighborhood tours and develop exhibitions on the city’s history.

If you are interested in sponsoring the Exposed DC Photography Show, it’s not too late! Email us at info[at]exposeddc.com for more information.

Tickets to the March 19 opening from 6 to 10 p.m., which includes the exhibit, snacks and open bar, are available for purchase now for $15. Limited tickets may be available for $20 at the door, but we always sell out so don’t be left in the cold!

And now, the envelope please. Your 2014 Exposed DC Photography Show winners are:

Our 2014 Contest Closes Tonight!

January 8, 2014 By Heather Goss

2014_show_graphic10Just before midnight tonight is your last chance to enter our 2014 photography contest! Remember, Exposed DC is about encouraging photographers of all levels, so whether you’re a professional or just find yourself getting some great shots with your new cameraphone, we want to see your work.

The exhibit, which will open at Long View Gallery in March, will show off the life and culture of the Washington, D.C. area, with lots of great local sponsors to help us throw a blow-out party for everyone — a real celebration of photography and this city.

Real the contest rules here, send in your $10 for three entries, and stick them in our Flickr pool by 11:59 p.m. We’ll announce the winners in just one week, January 15, and later on, you’ll find out if your image also won one of our five Best in Show prizes, awarded by our special judges, which comes with a $100 cash prize.

That reminds us, it’s time to throw another happy hour! To celebrate our winners, and meet a whole new group of photographer faces that have appeared, let’s all get together:

The Hamilton
600 14th St NW (Metro Center)
Wednesday, January 15, 6 p.m.

Contest Launch Party — Thanks for Coming!

December 5, 2013 By Heather Goss

We hope folks had a blast last night at our contest launch party! It was wonderful to see so many photographer faces that we hadn’t seen in a while, and so many Exposed supporters. Bluejacket was a fantastic host – we hope you enjoyed their gorgeous renovated Navy Yard warehouse and got to try lots of their unique brews (I think the Stowaway is my favorite so far). You can look forward to more of those behind the bar at our exhibit opening reception on March 19, 2014.

As we start our 8th year, expect even more from the bigger, badder Exposed DC. Last night kicked off what will be regular monthly happy hours so that photographers can meet and mingle off-line and explore new venues in the city. Save the date for our next one on Wednesday, January 15 – the day we announce our 2014 contest winners. And we have more surprises in store for this year’s show that we’ll be announcing soon, so stay tuned!

Celebrate our 2014 Contest Launch at Bluejacket December 4

November 20, 2013 By Heather Goss

Bluejacket Brewery by Tommy Wells

Photographers of the D.C. metro area, are you ready? The Exposed DC contest for our 2014 exhibit officially opens on December 4. We’ll have more details about how to enter soon, but start looking for your best photos that show off our local culture — or go out and take some! Check out winners from the previous seven years for some inspiration.

As always, the exhibition will be hosted by Long View Gallery next March. The gorgeous, huge gallery is implausibly EVEN BIGGER this year. They’ve taken over the space next door, and we are prepared to make use of every square inch.

While we celebrate the D.C. area in pictures that night, we also want you to try out new local flavors, so we’re proud to announce our 2014 beer sponsor, Bluejacket Brewery. The brewery, which opened last month in Navy Yard inside a former ship boiler factory along with its bar and restaurant, The Arsenal, will feature a constantly rotating selection of twenty original beers and five cask ales.

BluejacketHiResBluejacket was built to be a brewery without boundaries, allowing Beer Director Greg Engert and Brewmaster Megan Parisi to create beers across the broadest range of styles and flavors possible. At Bluejacket, understanding of and respect for the traditions and techniques of classic brewing coexist with a spirit of constant experimentation, innovation, and collaboration, leading to delicious beers that showcase seasonality, culinary inspiration, and historic interpretation. Expect beers that range from intensely flavored to subtly nuanced; that offer something distinctive and satisfying for every palate and every plate; and that reflect equally the past, present, and future of genuine craft brewing. Soon, the brewery will begin shipping to carefully selected restaurants, bars, and retail outlets throughout the region.

Where better to toast to the kick-off of our annual contest than with a meetup at  Bluejacket/Arsenal? Join us on Wednesday, December 4 at 6 p.m. to meet the folks behind Exposed, former (and future) winners, and the patrons and photo lovers who keep us all behind the lens. Bring friends and enjoy some unique D.C. brews with us.

Are you interested in volunteering with Exposed DC? If you’re interested in doing anything from contributing posts, to pouring beer on opening night, to just coming up with great ideas for us to execute, talk to us in person at Bluejacket or drop us a line for more information. To make sure you’re the first to know all the contest and opening night information, sign up for our newsletter.

Bluejacket/Arsenal is at 300 Tingey St. SE, a few blocks from the Navy Yard metro.
