In Frame: January 23, 2017 – Special Inauguration and Women’s March Edition

January 23, 2017 By Caroline Space

Hello photo people! This weekend was quintessentially D.C. Whether you went to the inauguration, or were one of the estimated 500,000 people to march the streets, I was proud to see so many photographers actively making images. Instead of one image, I thought today I would share some of my favorite frames fueled by this weekend’s political energy.

Today I created a portrait project on young women protesting the Inauguration. This is Maria Vollmar, a 20 year-old from Berkeley, California to march in the Women's March on Washington. "I'm not here to protest. I'm here to show the people we will stand up for them." #youngwomenmarch

This image by Jordan Barab is the perfect illustration of what it feels like to walk through the thick summer in Washington, D.C. Additionally, I think this a symptom of what I like to call “museum fatigue.”

Zoom in to the House of Cards opening. What an interesting catch of three people going about their day on North Capitol by Jordan Barab.

Lines, lines, everywhere there are lines. Jordan Barab created this geometric, patterned image which forces your eye to go in many directions, even though the sign says “One Way”.

There’s so much to like in this deliciously messy shot by Jordan Barab—the deluge of rectangular lines broken up by the fire escape and the hand truck; the strong textures of the painted brickwork; the saturated rust-brown color theme accented by the red coat. And if you’re tired of summer already, it’s nice to look at a photo taken in January.
