Our annual photography contest opens for entries in one week! That’s right, the 2023 contest is just around the corner, and we can’t wait to see all the amazing photographs you’ve captured over the last year or so. Start looking through your archives now or carve out some time over the holidays to reminisce. You’ll have until the end of January to submit your favorite photos that showcase life in D.C.

  • Join StreetMeetDC tomorrow at 5 p.m. in front of the National Zoo for their final meet of the year with Zoo Lights.
  • The shortlisted images of the Wildlife Photographer of the Year People’s Choice Award feature a playful polar bear cub, two nuzzling red foxes, and golden snub-nosed monkeys huddled together.
  • Renowned sports and music photographer Michael Zagaris reflects on six decades of football photography.
  • A new book by Prix Pictet features recent work by 64 women on the theme of sustainability, from freefalling office workers to funeral customs in rural China.
  • Mauna Loa, the biggest active volcano on Earth, began erupting this week for the first time in nearly 40 years.
  • A collection of aerial photos by Mitch Rouse show immaculate patterns of California farmlands.
  • Self-proclaimed catographer Nils Jacobi offers an expansive look at felines through his growing portfolio of over 10,000 cat pictures.

We’d like to wish you all a Happy Thanksgiving in advance as we’ll be taking next week off for the holiday. Thank you all for being part of this amazing community! 

  • Through photos and interviews taken in three DC neighborhoods — Congress Heights, Park View, and Stronghold —  the “Dap is a Love Language” exhibit invites viewers to appreciate the familiar greeting, and consider how, just like we do, dap exists in multitudes. Head to the Anacostia Arts Center tomorrow night for the opening reception from 6:30-9:30 p.m.
  • Join Photoworks tonight for the opening reception of Bruce Falkinburg’s retrospective exhibit, 7-9:30 p.m. You can leave a condolence for the late darkroom photography teacher and dear friend of Photoworks.
  • You can also register for Photoworks free, monthly Photo Matters meeting this Sunday at 10 a.m.
  • Ben Bair worked as an Artemis engineer by day and a launch photographer by night.
  • The Natural Landscape Photography Awards 2022 announced the winners of the second annual competition.
  • Growing concern has photographers pulling back from photoshoots in San Francisco due to attempted and successful robbery attempts.
  • A 73-year-old man had to be rescued from a peat bog in Wales when he slipped trying to take a picture of the sunset.

On this Veterans Day, we’re thinking of all the men and women who have served our country. Thank you for your service and Happy Veterans Day!

  • Join Lost Origins Gallery and the White House News Photographers Association (WHNPA) tomorrow night for the closing reception of the WHNPA’s 100th Anniversary exhibit, 7-10 p.m.
  • A new exhibit in New York includes never-before-seen William Eggleston photographs taken during the early 70s when he was working on his Guide, the controversial and groundbreaking solo exhibit at the MoMA.
  • Author Michael Lesy recently published a book that looks at the last photographs and life stories of Walker Evans.
  • For almost two decades, Thomas Holton has photographed a family in New York’s Chinatown through marriages, divorces, and kids growing up and moving out in a project that the photographer says has turned into his life.
  • Studio Gallery is hosting a group photography show featuring the work of 12 photographers in the lower gallery through November 19 and participating in Third Thursdays on November 17 from 5-6 p.m.
  • A photographer that happened upon the small, remote town of Bliss, Idaho by chance has since begun creating a time capsule of life there.
  • The Architectural Photography Awards has announced the shortlist of entrants for this year’s competition.

  • We’re loving Capital Weather Gang’s cool photo story about the Tidal Basin over the four seasons.
  • WPOW’s 16th Annual Photography Exhibition opens at Lost Origins Outside this Sunday, 2-5 p.m.
  • The Black Women Photographers X Nikon Grants return for the second year with $50K in grants and gear available to the winners. Applications are due by November 25.
  • B&H Photo’s OPTIC conference will be held this Sunday and Monday with live streaming options available for keynotes and other sessions.
  • It was a big week in photography news with several companies announcing new equipment from camera bodies to lenses.
  • A close-up of a crocodile in Cuba is the overall winner of this year’s Mangrove Photography Awards.
  • 85 years later, a camera abandoned by explorers is found on a glacier in Canada.
  • Save the date for the opening of the “Dap is a Love Language” exhibition at the Anacostia Arts Center on November 19.

  • The 2022 Leica Picture of the Year is an image taken by legendary Magnum photographer Thomas Hoepker on a road trip in the USA in 1963.
  • The United Nations is using before-and-after satellite imagery to track the destruction of Ukraine’s architecture, art, and historical sites.
  • Images of an elderly woman hanging her laundry during COVID lockdown won the Taylor Wessing Photographic Portrait Prize 2022.
  • A California photographer thought he was taking a picture of a dolphin leaping in the air behind a surfer but it turned out to be a great white.
  • Ever wonder what an ant looks like up close? You may wish you hadn’t after seeing for yourself.
  • Vote for your favorite finalist in the Comedy Wildlife Photography Awards through November 27.
  • Photos show a new art installation draped over the National Museum of Women in the Arts. The work is done by by Austrian artist Katharina Cibulka who has been turning construction sites into feminist conversation pieces.
