  • Join StreetMeetDC at The Wonderland Ballroom tomorrow starting at 11:30 a.m. for an edit and chill session.
  • Paul McCartney rediscovered around 1,000 images in his archive from 1963 and 1964 during The Beatles meteoric rise to superstardom.
  • Winners of the Art of Building competition have been announced.
  • An app for webcams and streaming introduced a feature that uses AI to make it look like your eyes are always looking at the camera.
  • Wonders of Street View lets you explore random places captured by Google Street View.
  • For the past 40 years, documentary photographer Roger Tiley has been capturing miners and the communities they live in as their way of life slowly disappeared.
  • Three Leica Women Photo awardees share their career-changing experience.
  • The DC Street Photography Collective’s (DCSPC’s) “Hiding in Plain Sight” exhibit runs through February 18 at Project Create Arts Center. Local photographers can share their five best street photos on Instagram with the #dc_spc_2023show hashtag by February 4 to respond to DCSPC’s open call.

The deadline for our annual photo contest is fast approaching! You have until the end of the month to submit your best images of the D.C. metro area for the chance to be part of our 17th annual exhibition. If you’d like to learn more about the show and the types of images that are selected, be sure to watch our feature in the October 2022 WETA Arts episode. You can also peruse winning images from previous years on our site here.

  • Speaking of previous winners, Exposed alum Sue Dorfman has been capturing voting stories from across the nation for nearly three decades.
  • The DC Street Photography Collective’s (DCSPC’s) “Hiding in Plain Sight” exhibition opens tonight at Project Create Arts Center, 6:00 p.m. Local photographers can also take part in their open call through February 4 with selected images to be exhibited at the show closing.
  • As part of the opening, DCSPC member (and Exposed alum!) Chris Suspect will be selling around 100 8×10 signed prints.
  • Three artists are suing Midjourney, Stability AI, and DeviantArt for their use of Stable Diffusion, an AI art-generating tool.
  • Getty Images is also suing Stability AI over alleged copyright violation.
  • The Falcon Heavy rocket launch last weekend happened in twilight, providing rare evening light that allowed for new insights into the liftoff and return of the rocket.
  • Artist Holly Nelson discovered noted photographer Louis Fleckenstein while researching family genealogy.
  • Chris Hytha takes viewers to the top of historic skyscrapers with his drone photography.

Just a few weeks left to enter our annual photography contest. Submit your favorite images of the D.C. metro area by January 31 for the chance to be a part of our 17th annual exhibit. We want to see this city of ours through your lens, from memorable moments to the beauty in the everyday and everything in between.

  • The DC Street Photography Collective will have an exhibit at Project Create January 20 through February 18 and will hold an open call in conjunction with the exhibit.
  • A British news agency has shared some of their favorite images from 2022 and invited the public to vote for their personal favorites.
  • WPOW is looking for a president for the 2023/2024 term.
  • The winners of the International Dog Photography Awards were announced this week.
  • Finnish photographer Mikko Lagerstedt captures peaceful and expansive Nordic landscapes.
  • Winners of the fourth Close-up Photographer of the Year competition have been announced.
  • Sign up for classes with Capital Photography Center to learn how to get the most of external flash, create a photography website, and more.
  • A video of a tuna fish’s death upon reacting to flash photography at an aquarium is making the rounds on the internet again, a reminder of the risk of using flash in that setting.

Happy New Year! We hope 2023 is off to a great start and look forward to reflecting on the last year or so in our nation’s capital with our annual photo contest. Have you entered your favorite images yet? Don’t let the deadline for entries sneak up on you. Submit your best images showcasing the D.C. metro area by January 31 for a chance to be part of our 17th annual exhibition celebrating local photography!

  • Washingtonian’s best things to do in the DC area for this week includes the Hirshhorn’s first survey of photographs captured by multigenerational Chinese artists between the 1990s and 2000s.
  • Keith Kozloff’s photography exhibition, a reflection on “deep time,” opens tomorrow at the Delaplaine Visual Arts Center in Frederick, MD at 2:00 p.m.
  • An exhibition of photos taken by Colin Winterbottom offers a rare look at the artwork that’s been atop the John A. Wilson Building for more than a century.
  • Art critic Louis Jacobson rounded up eight shows from last year for his annual list of top local photography exhibits for the Washington City Paper.
  • Get a behind the scenes look at the birth of Sesame Street through David Attie’s photographs he captured while on assignment for a little-seen, hyper-focused magazine in the late 1960s.
  • Thousands of photographs taken by Coventry photographer Arthur Cooper from the 1940s to the 1960s have been digitized and released online with the public helping to identify people and places shown in the images.
  • A doctor saved a Marine’s life in Vietnam in 1968; a photo just reunited them last year.

  • Join food photographer Scott Suchman for a full-day workshop at The Red Hen on January 22 with dinner to follow, $595.
  • Check out the newly minted MVT Photo Walk along K Street between 4th & 5th Streets and in Prather’s Alley in Mount Vernon Triangle, part of a partnership between Exposed DC and Mount Vernon Triangle Community Improvement District.
  • Aviator Garrett Fisher is traveling the world in his tiny blue-white “Super Cub” aircraft, on a quest to document every remaining glacier on Earth.
  • Scottish artist David Gilliver won the top prize in the macro category of the British Photography Awards for a photo that uses tiny figurines to turn a face mask into a swimming pool.
  • While players and fans were keeping the eye on the ball during the World Cup, Paul Burrows was more curious about which cameras the professional sports photographers were using on the sidelines.
  • Twenty iconic photographs by Richard Avedon are now on view at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History in a new exhibition.
  • Photographer Sarah Lee takes to the streets of London as the nights drew to their longest during the winter solstice.
