InstantDC Open Call – Labor Day Deadline Looms

August 28, 2014 By exposeddc

The deadline for our InstantDC 2014 Open Call is nearly upon us. If you haven’t entered the contest yet, you’d better get cracking!

And in case you’re spinning your wheels on which of your images to submit, here’s one more example of an earlier InstantDC show winner to provide a spark, perhaps. Ryan Maxwell‘s crisp, abstract shot dances with geometric shapes and lines, while the unusual perspective adds intrigue, making you wonder which way is up.

Whatever your particular style or subject matter, whatever type of device or medium you use, as long as you’re based in the D.C. area, we want to see your best photographs! So be sure to submit your work before midnight on the night of September 1. Good luck to all!

Have you submitted your best work to our InstantDC 2014 Open Call yet? If you have, good on you! If not, you have less than two weeks left.

Still wondering what to choose from your portfolio? Here’s another selection from an earlier InstantDC show to give you a general feel for the kind of images that might catch the eye of our judges. This beautifully composed photo by Jenny Markely is filled with serenity, joy and innocence. Just dreamy.

Whether your work is as soft and gentle as this, or is cut from a completely different cloth, just be sure to submit your images right here before September 1!

The Places We Find Photography – Andrew Wyeth’s Paintings at NGA

July 17, 2014 By Caroline Space

Looking Out, Looking In at the National Gallery of Art is a small, humble show featuring mid-century artist Andrew Wyeth’s paintings of windows and farmhouses – a show that quickly became one of my all-time favorite exhibits. You will not see his most famous painting, Christina’s World, or images of his muse Helga; instead, the NGA has followed the thread from their painting, Wind from the Sea, which is regularly on view. This is an emotional journey through light, movement, and contemplation—not only in the process of his paintings but the process of where your mind wanders while looking at art. These works felt familiar but I could not unravel the why at first—this is the first I’ve seen most of these works. I looked back and forth between the paintings and their labels—the dates struck me. The 1940s through 70s were not frequented with many ethereal, subject-driven paintings.

However, photography was.

Last Thursday night photographer Michael Andrade opened his photography show In My Eyes at The Coupe in Columbia Heights. We’re familiar with Andrade’s intense concert images, as he was part of the Instant DC collective which joined our team at Exposed a few weeks ago. He’s been following and photographing bands from D.C., Maryland, and Virginia.

You can enjoy his work, along with paintings inspired by Andrade’s work by street artist Rose Jaffe, in the coffee shop and bar section of the venue through September 1. We asked Andrade a few questions about his photography:
