Greetings, Bo Tan! This image has a lot going on in the frame, but it works. The different shades of green combined with the shadows and spots of dappled lighting create dynamic textures and depth. By the way, oddities in pictures are always delights for me–are those bridal figurines?

Don’t forget this Friday is the opening reception of our new exhibit at the Crystal City Fotowalk. We hope to see you there!

This week we’ve travelled to early 80’s Baltimore, encountering the transgressive mindset of John Waters’ campy films. Photographer Kaitlin Jencso frames the back-alley of a city synonymous with Waters in a manner that emulates the grunge and harshness of the filmmaker, showcasing the city’s intriguing and alluring grit.

Ooh—this photo is satiating. Photographers and artists are gifts to society—they look up and down finding new ways of seeing a scene. Here Flickr user ep_jhu spies upon those below framing them in a grey box surrounded by blue rectangles. The lights create a cool flow of luminosity making me feel like I am looking down to the ocean floor.

I realized I don’t feature traditional style portraits very often. But when I see a gorgeous image on my screen sometimes it changes my whole Monday In Frame plan. In James Jackson’s image, the woman’s coy expression, and the way in which her hair falls softly with slight movement, embodies a demure moment in a somewhat gritty scene. It creates a cinematic quality that makes me want to know more about this ingénue.

A great photo is one that makes you see something in a way you’ve never seen it before, especially one that makes you pull a brain muscle trying to figure it out. Exhibit A: Roy‘s image of the platform at Takoma Metro station. When I first saw the image in thumbnail format, it looked like a modern sculpture of an eagle, or something related to Batman. When I opened up the full image, it took me a while to comprehend exactly what I was seeing.
