  • Join APA | DC for a casual gathering at the National Portrait Gallery Kogod Courtyard tomorrow from noon to 2 p.m.
  • The WINTER exhibit at Multiple Exposures Gallery features 24 images selected by juror Tim Anderson. The gallery is open 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. daily through January 28.
  • Photo London declared Valérie Belin their Master of Photography for 2024, an award that goes to a living artist who has made an exceptional contribution to photography.
  • What’s the key to wildlife photography? Patience, according to Canadian Geographic’s photographer of the year.
  • Join Photoworks on Zoom tomorrow at 2:00 p.m. for an artist talk with Walter Plotnick.
  • The Meeting House Gallery in Columbia, MD is showing “Art of the Silver Spring Camera Club” which features 60 works by 23 photographers, through April 13.
  • Black Women Photographers x Nikon Grants are back for the third year; apply by February 17 to take home part of $50,000 in project-based and business grants and Nikon mirrorless Z series gear.
  • In a new federal lawsuit, photographer Allen Kee alleges the Detroit Lions and other entities used his copyrighted image of Barry Sanders without his permission.

  • If you’re in Baltimore this month or next, you can catch Exposed alum Kim Keller’s exhibition at the Hamilton Arts Collective. The opening reception is tomorrow from 1-4 p.m. Artist receptions will also be held on January 21 and February 18.
  • Dr. Peter Magubane, the South African photographer whose images documenting the cruelties and violence of apartheid drew global acclaim but punishment at home died on Monday at the age of 91.
  • After 5,000 photos, Martin Bond has decided to conclude his project, which showcased the city of Cambridge with an image a day.
  • Recall the biggest film photography news of 2023 with this recap.
  • See how people celebrated the new year around the world.
  • New year, new calendar…how about one featuring airborne cats inspired by Salvador Dalí?
  • Register for the next Arnold Newman Lecture Series on Photography happening January 28 in conjunction with the Dorothea Lange exhibit on display at the National Gallery of Art through the end of March.
  • Submit photos of the Mount Vernon Triangle neighborhood by January 15 for the chance to be part of the next MVT Photo Walk. Free to enter with a $100 honorarium for each featured photograph selected for the show.

As 2023 comes to a close, we reflect on the year that was and look forward to what the new year will bring. While you reminisce, we invite you to enter our 18th annual photography contest celebrating life in the D.C. metro area through the lens of the photographers who call this region home. We hope this holiday season has treated you well and that your new year kicks off with a solid start!

  • Astronomers have a long tradition of finding holiday cheer in outer space; last month NASA released an image of the Christmas Tree Galaxy Cluster.
  • The New York Times’ Year in Pictures commemorates the big news events from January to December along with some everyday bliss.
  • Associated Press (AP) also shared the most memorable photos of the year as captured by AP photographers.
  • Amateur Photographer recaps this year’s breakthroughs and trends in the photography industry.
  • Have a great photo of the Mount Vernon Triangle neighborhood? Submit it to the open call for the third MVT Photo Walk by January 15.
  • The 18th Annual Washington Gardener Magazine Photo Contest will accept entries January 1 through 21.
  • Jamie Scott’s latest timelapse documents the icy seizure of plants, leaves, and terrain across New York State and Montréal.

Our 18th annual photo contest opened last week, and we’re excited to see the submissions rolling in already! You have until January 31st to submit your favorite images you’ve taken showing what it’s like to live, work, and love here in our nation’s capitol and the surrounding commuting suburbs.

  • If you have photos of the Mount Vernon Triangle neighborhood, we also encourage you to submit to the open call for our third show in the MVT Photo Walk.
  • And for the portrait photographers, you won’t want to miss the National Portrait Gallery’s triennial Outwin Boochever Portrait Competition.
  • The jury in Scott Hargis Photo Vs. Pacifica Senior Living awarded the architecture photographer the maximum of $150,000 per image for 43 images that were used without a licensing agreement.
  • Seems like as good a time as any for a refresher on what photographers should know about copyright, from the U.S. Copyright Office itself.
  • National Geographic photographer Keith Ladzinski shares night photography tips.
  • Nice Film Club is having its first photo contest with the theme of winter landscape and a prize of 10 rolls of film.
  • A new book contains dozens of rare photos of Salvador Dalí’s seaside home and studio captured by by Coco Capitán.
