for the love of DC photography
I’ve shot the occasional DC Rollergirl photo, so I know a good one when I see it. The falling of the light on the skater’s face and upper body, whether naturally occurring or cleverly set up is what really makes this beautiful image from Pablo Benavente. The subtle rendition of the cluttered surroundings balances perfectly with the skater’s focused expression and the smooth skin tones of her arms, shoulders and back.
What we see when we look at a photograph is filtered through our personal experience. When photographs are ambiguous, it is our unique perspective that shifts how we view them. Work like Angela Kleis’ There’s Been a Terrible Accident series relies on the viewer to determine what’s real.
Photographer Noe Todorovich took this iphone photograph of a man walking near Pentagon City. She waited for him to step out of the deep, geometrically shaped shadows and created an excellent frame for him in the light.
