We’re not used to seeing this much ice at Great Falls park. This photo by Phil Yabut shows just how cold it has been in the area, and how different the falls can look throughout the year. The snowy owl he photographed last week in downtown D.C. would be right at home (and at least safe from traffic) here.

It is so cold that even the sun is freezing her buns off. Photographer JY O’Reilly caught a woman dressed as the sun taking a dip in the Potomac for the “Keep Winter Cold” Polar Bear Plunge. We hope the warm-themed outfit made the dip less treacherous.

Well, owl be damned! Whoo would have thought a snowy owl would be perched atop a drugstore in downtown D.C.? Luckily, Philip Yabut was there to capture this photo of the beautiful bird. The snowy owls are heading farther south than normal this year. The Cornell Lab of Ornithology is tracking the owls on the website eBird. You can see where they have been seen this year, and in previous “irruption” years. What a hoot!

Chris McDaniel continues his series of high-contrast black and white street photos with this shot of two Ethiopian women wearing traditional shawls. The sheer nature of the clothing’s material results in a broad range of tones, creating a softness absent in many of the other images in the series.
