Cock by Mike Maguire

I’ve seen many images of Katharina Fritsch’s Hahn/Cock since it’s arrival to the National Gallery of Art’s newly renovated East Building this year. The opaque electrifying blue rooster is a magnet to the eye. It’s placed on the roof facing the city—keeping a close watch over the governing landscape. Mike Maguire’s image is a decisively composed frame, which depicts a woman in a yellow sweater and a friend gazing upon the monumental azure poultry. Mike’s photograph makes us feel as if we are witnessing the scene being captured and not simply looking at an image of a wonderfully weird bird.

It’s a bird! It’s a plane! It’s Featured Instagrammers! The Canadian Snowbirds’ flyover of D.C. anchors this week’s trail of images, all dominated by distinct geometric shapes and lines.

Don’t forget to tag your images #exposeddc on Instagram for a chance to be included next time.

drugstore owl by Philip Yabut
drugstore owl by Philip Yabut

Well, owl be damned! Whoo would have thought a snowy owl would be perched atop a drugstore in downtown D.C.? Luckily, Philip Yabut was there to capture this photo of the beautiful bird. The snowy owls are heading farther south than normal this year. The Cornell Lab of Ornithology is tracking the owls on the website eBird. You can see where they have been seen this year, and in previous “irruption” years. What a hoot!

ChrisSuspect_BirdBenchOne of the things I enjoy most about the images from regular contributor Chris Suspect is the way his photographs make me ask questions that have no answers. For example, “What the…” or “How the…” This image is no exception. Stacked on top of a pretty seaside backdrop, the layers of this photo are bizarre and funny. We can only imagine what was playing out in real life, but the photo is likely much more interesting than the reality.
