It’s a popular adage that “bad weather makes great photos,” and we could not agree more. This snow day is the perfect time to launch a D.C. area Snow Photo Challenge. Submit your best snow photograph to our Flickr pool with the tag #snowexposed by Monday and you could win a free pair of tickets to our Exposed DC Photography Show opening on March 19 at Long View Gallery. We’ll pick one photo as our winner and feature a few more of our favorite photos here on the blog. Snow photos can be from this storm, or any other snowfall through last winter.

So break out your cold weather gear and line up your friend to stage some Olympic events or capture a snow man coming to life. Whatever your ideas, get out there, capture it and share them in the Flickr pool. We can’t wait to see the results!

Winners will be announced on Tuesday.

*Current Exposed photo show winners can participate to win a pair of tickets to give to your friends.

If your evening dose of Bob Costas or 3 a.m. livestreaming isn’t satisfying your Olympics fix, there are plenty of other ways to keep track of the Games. Many photographers and athletes in Sochi posting to social media, so we decided to put together a compilation of lists we have found.

Photographer Melissa Lyttle created a Twitter list of photographers at the Games.

Huffington Post Canada compiled a list of Canadian athletes posting to Instagram.

Buzzfeed has their own list of athletes sharing on Instagram.

The New York Times has a list of Russian journalists covering the games and posting to Instagram. It also has a stream of Olympics photos they’re calling the Sochi Photo Firehose; since they disappear after a few moments, it’s like a steady flow of (safe-for-work) Snapchats.

And finally, People Magazine published a list of athletes and journalists to follow on Twitter, with a few bonus Instagram-ers.

This week we have photographers looking back on working with Phillip Seymour Hoffman, a photographer’s packing list for Sochi, and a model cuddling with a tiger. Enjoy your Friday Links!

  • Photojournalist Bill Eppridge has never solved the mystery of why his negatives of the Beatles went missing, or how they were mysteriously returned.
  • Zack Seckler’s aerial photographs of animals look like abstract art.
  • Photographer Jeff Cable shared his packing list for covering the Olympic Games in Sochi.
  • Three photographers reflect on photographing Phillip Seymour Hoffman for the New York Times.

  • A large animal has escaped from the Tokyo zoo!
  • Speaking of zoos, the National Zoo has released new images of the African Lion Cubs.
  • The National Portrait Gallery has a new exhibit showcasing images of Washington during the Civil War, called “Mr. Lincoln’s Washington: A Civil War Portfolio.”

Exposed Interview: Nick Gingold, California BrewMasters

Vinnie Cilurzo, Russian River, Santa Rosa, in his barrel room, home to some of the best sour beers in the world.

Washington D.C. is a city that sees many residents come and go, and that includes photographers. After living and working in D.C. as a photojournalist for six years, photographer Nick Gingold moved to California and started working with California craft beer brewers. His California BrewMasters project is a series of portraits and interviews with many of the craft brewers in the Golden State, and Gingold is trying to raise $25,000 through Kickstarter to produce a book.

While Gingold may no longer call D.C. home, he still travels here several times a year for work. Anyone who can produce such hilarious portraits of our annual High Heel race participants, will always be part of the D.C. photo community.

Exposed: What interested you in Craft Brewers, and how did this idea get started?

Gingold: This all started about two years ago. I had just moved back to my hometown in Southern California from Washington D.C., and as a photographer I was trying to find a new project to sink my teeth into. My brother-in-law was getting really into craft beer and began introducing me to all of these amazing flavors. He now works at a brewery called Left Coast in San Clemente, CA. I started to explore it more and realized there was this rapid acceleration within the craft beer industry, they were seeing double digit yearly growth during a down economy. With that, a really interesting sub-culture of beer-enthusiasts was being formed. Today, there are over 300 breweries in California, next year we’ll see 40-60 new ones come out of the San Diego area alone. It just seemed like something really great was happening and there was an opportunity for that to be explored.
