Hope everyone stayed safe and warm during the snow this week–our first major snow event here in years! Capital Weather Gang staff and readers captured some beautiful wintry scenes around the region. You may recognize a few familiar names in the captions and may even want to consider entering stellar snow pics of your own to our annual photo contest before the deadline on January 30!

  • The 16th Annual Washington Gardener Magazine Photo Contest is accepting entries through January 21.
  • Iconic images captured by NASA photographers in the 1960s are currently available on Artnet Auctions.
  • Photoworks’ 2021 Reflection Video recaps events and photos from last year. There’s still time to register for upcoming winter classes too!
  • Don’t forget to tag your Instagram images with #ArtatMetrobarDC for a chance to be part of our monthly projection exhibits at metrobar, co-curated with Focus on the Story.
  • Andrew McCarthy documented Comet Leonard over the Arizona horizon in a composite of 25 separate shots.
  • The 28th annual Harbin Ice Festival opened this week in northeastern China with huge lighted sculptures made of ice.
  • An Israeli wildlife photographer captured a flock of birds forming the shape of a spoon complete with a heap of sugar.

Our annual photography contest is open through January 30, so you can submit images anytime between now and then.   • Photographer Dee Dwyer shares her experience getting to know more about the bike life culture of Washington, D.C.
  • Hundred Heroines charity added 25 photographers to its ever-growing list of women influential to the field of photography.
  • Twitter bans sharing photos of people without their express consent.
  • Cool job alert: Tom O’Brien is looking for a Jr Photo Engineer. The position is based at National Geographic’s headquarters.

It’s nearly that time of year again… The holiday season is officially upon us, which means our 16th annual photography contest is just around the corner! Join us at metrobar DC on Friday, December 10 at 6:00 p.m. for a happy hour as we kickoff this year’s contest. We’ll also be enjoying the first monthly #ArtatMetrobarDC photography slideshow we co-curated with Focus on the Story.

  • Speaking of metrobar DC, head there this Sunday for a holiday art fair and book sale, including the 3 p.m. opening of “Look Hear Gallery,” an exhibit curated by Shedrick Pelt that celebrates the beauty and intimacies of Black culture in Chocolate City through the lens of Black photographers. 
  • Join Exposed alum John Buckley for a book signing of “Pictures of U,” his new limited-edition photobook at the Leica Store DC on December 9 at 6:00 p.m., free. 
  • Paying homage to historic photographs of groups of musicians and producers, Dee Dwyer assembled more than 100 go-go musicians in Chuck Brown Memorial Park for a photo dubbed, “A Great Day in Go-Go.”
  • Flickr’s Your Best Shot 2021 competition is accepting entries through January 4 in six different categories.
  • The closing reception for the DC Art Now 2021 exhibition of Art Bank finalist works will be held on December 9 from 5:00-7:00 p.m., free.
  • View a selection of photographs by Yuri Long and Jon Malis at Photoworks online or in person at the gallery on Saturdays and Sundays from 1:00-4:00 p.m. There will also be an artist talk on December 8 at 7:00 p.m. on Zoom and a gallery reception on December 10 at 5:00 p.m.
  • One hundred photographers contributed wildlife photos to the Vital Impacts Initiative to raise funds and awareness for grassroots conservation organizations.

  • Join PortraitMeetDC for their last meet of 2021 this Sunday at the grounds of Montpelier Mansion, 2:00 p.m. 
  • A new documentary tells the story of photographer Eadweard Muybridge, who revolutionized photography with his sequential images of a horse galloping. 
  • The Comedy Wildlife Photography Awards announced the winners of this year’s competition.
  • Renowned photojournalist Tom Stoddart, who died at the age of 68, is remembered for his coverage of major international stories including conflict in Lebanon, apartheid’s end in South Africa, the fall of the Berlin Wall, the siege of Sarajevo, and wars in the Gulf.
  • Adorama announced a strategic partnership with Pictar, a company focused on mobile photography solutions.
  • Filmmaker and photographer Jan van IJken deep dives into the maneuvers and transformations of plankton using multiple microscopes.

  • Join Photoworks for their monthly Coffee & Critique session this Sunday at 10:00 a.m., free. Must have images to attend.
  • The American Society of Media Photographers (ASMP)  announced an exclusive collaboration with PetaPixel to bring the latest industry news and opinion to a new weekly show as part of the recently launched ASMP Academy.
  • Cristina Mittermeier, a marine biologist and activist who pioneered the field of conservation photography, shares how photography and storytelling can turn apathy into climate action.
  • Winners of the environmental photographer of the year competition, organized by environmental and water management charity CIWEM and WaterBear, have been announced. You can vote for the people’s choice award through December 1.
  • Lafayette College in Pennsylvania has been gifted a collection of more than 1,600 civil rights movement-era photographs worth $10 million.
  • Two cousins salvaged a film-development machine that is now part of their Take It Easy Film Lab that processes more than 200 rolls a day for clients garnered almost entirely from Instagram.
  • Josef Koudelka donated more than 2,000 photographs to four institutions in the Czech Republic; early in his career, he was a secret dissident documenting life behind the Iron Curtain and smuggling his negatives out to be distributed by Magnum Photos.
