Friday Links

Christmas week, whether you celebrate or not, is often one punctuated by lots of downtime, so we’ve got some great reading and even better pictures to keep you busy through the weekend. And of course, we assume you’re taking some of that time to pick your three best D.C.-area photos to enter into our contest? Submissions close on midnight January 8 (and be mindful of our suggestion to make your Flickr account now and upload a few images, even if you aren’t ready to submit them to our contest group, because it can take a few days for Flickr to approve your account and make it viewable to the public — i.e. us!) Do you have questions about the contest or what you should enter? Ask us in the comments or at info [at] exposeddc.com.

  • The Washington City Paper’s Louis Jacobson tells us what he considers the best photography exhibits in D.C. in 2013.
  • Vivian Maier was a pioneering street photographer who became a household name when a couple of guys stumbled upon nearly her entire life’s work in 2007 and launched an immensely successful Kickstarter to film a movie about her. Now you can view her contact sheets online.
  • Using tilt-shift to create “Tiny universes” made out of pictures of the big universe. This one is for the astro-nerds.
  • A young Syrian photographer who freelanced for Reuters was killed while covering the fighting in Aleppo last week.
  • Speaking of young Syrians, HIPA, a Dubai arts foundation, worked with child refugees in a Jordanian camp, giving them cameras and lessons on how to use photography as a form of communication. Incidentally, HIPA also runs a photography contest open to anyone in the world over 18 that closes on December 31, 2013, is free to enter, and offers nearly $400,000 in prize money.
  • The headline “Photographer Finds Cockatiels, Jesus in NYC Basements” definitely had us clicking through.
  • The famed horse track, where thoroughbreds like Seabiscuit and Citation once ran, has closed.
  • A Washington, D.C. family poses for a Christmas portrait in 1918.
  • We need every publication to start doing this: The New Yorker posts all the bizarro photos they dug up while doing research in 2013.
  • You probably saw this link posted on Facebook by every photographer you know last week. These cheetsheets are even more beautiful than they are helpful.
  • Looking to develop some film? Local Darkroom has what you need, wherever you might be.
  • The only thing wrong with this photo gallery of Dominic the pit bull puppy cuddling animal patients as they come out of surgery is that we can’t reach through the screen and cuddle Dominic right back.
  • A new book, Dorothea Lange: Grab A Hunk Of Lightning, takes a look at documentary photographer’s life.
  • Well this is pretty terrible. A San Diego male tiger killed its mate while attempting to breed. If that’s not your cup of link tea, how about this photographer getting a scary view of a tiger shark with its jaws wide open.

Around and around it goes. Have you visited Zoo Lights at the National Zoo? It’s basically a Twilight Zone zoo full of lit-up dinosaurs and creepy man-pandas trapped in snow globes, and yet pretty fun nevertheless. Photographer Marcos took some time practicing shortish long-exposures in front of the carousel, which seems a good enough reason for any of us to go. Zoo Lights is closed tonight, Christmas, and New Year’s Eve, but will otherwise be open 5 to 9 p.m. through January 1; admission is free.

This stunning photo is definitely one that makes me sit back and ask, “Is that real?” Richard Barnhill caught this cold front (that is, for those who have forgotten, something that will be greeting us again viciously soon enough after this lovely autumn-like weekend) plowing through the sky over downtown D.C. in mid-November. The cloud wall is something else, but it’s the perfect twilight long exposure that makes this photograph sing. (View this one big.)

New! Guest Judges Awarding Best in Show Prizes for 8th Annual Exposed DC

December 11, 2013 By Heather Goss

2014_show_graphic10

Update: We’ve added a 6th judge! The post below reflects the addition.

In our efforts to make the Exposed DC Photography Show bigger and better for its 8th year and our first year flying solo, we have an exciting announcement for you: We’re awarding cash prizes!

The contest will be judged as usual by our team, choosing about 45 winning images to appear in our exhibit at Long View Gallery and our exhibition program. But this year, we’ve asked six prominent D.C. photographers to serve as Special Judges: Lucian Perkins, Jacquelyn Martin, Nancy Walz, Dan Westergren, Jamie Rose, and Susan Sterner. They will study the pool of winners, and each judge will each choose a personal best in show. Those six photographers will receive our special judge’s award and a $100 cash prize.

This award is made possible through the generous contributions of the Corcoran College of Art and Design.

Meet our Exposed DC Special Judges, who may be putting their discerning eyes on your photograph. Get those potential winners entered into our contest by January 8!

Contest Launch Party — Thanks for Coming!

We hope folks had a blast last night at our contest launch party! It was wonderful to see so many photographer faces that we hadn’t seen in a while, and so many Exposed supporters. Bluejacket was a fantastic host – we hope you enjoyed their gorgeous renovated Navy Yard warehouse and got to try lots of their unique brews (I think the Stowaway is my favorite so far). You can look forward to more of those behind the bar at our exhibit opening reception on March 19, 2014.

As we start our 8th year, expect even more from the bigger, badder Exposed DC. Last night kicked off what will be regular monthly happy hours so that photographers can meet and mingle off-line and explore new venues in the city. Save the date for our next one on Wednesday, January 15 – the day we announce our 2014 contest winners. And we have more surprises in store for this year’s show that we’ll be announcing soon, so stay tuned!
