  • Several Northern Virginia arts agencies are forming a designated multi-jurisdictional alliance to boost the region’s arts and culture scene.
  • The overall winner of the World Sports Photography Awards 2022, David Gray, captured an image of a butterfly resting on tennis player Naomi Osaka’s fingertips during a match.
  • Presidential photographer Pete Souza will be at Sixth & I for his book tour on October 2. Ticket options include in-person and virtual, with or without a signed copy of the book.
  • PortraitMeetDC will host a meet on August 20 from 3-6 p.m. at Long Bridge Park.
  • B&H Photo’s OPTIC conference is heading west to Monterey, California in November with presentations, a trade expo, photo critiques, and a whale watching experience.
  • Winners of the Nature TTL Photographer of the Year competition have been announced.
  • French scientist Étienne Klein tweeted a photo of chorizo with a description that it was Proxima Centauri, the closest star to the sun, taken by the James Webb Space Telescope. He claims it was a joke, but the Internet did not get it for some time.

  • Be sure to catch “Behind the Loom: The Legacy, Heritage & Resilience of Navajo Weaving” at Lost Origins Gallery before it closes Sunday.
  • The National Portrait Gallery in London revealed the shortlist for the Taylor Wessing Prize with the winner to be announced in October.
  • Canon released its second quarter 2022 financial results with a Q&A section addressing the brand’s future in photography.
  • Registration is open for two exciting in-person workshops taught by Exposed DC alum James Corbett and sponsored by the Professional Photographers of America: one focused on travel photography featuring Icelandic adventures and another hands-on session with light painting and restored trolleys, limited to just four attendees.
  • With a month to go before the competition closes, the Comedy Wildlife Photography Awards released the funniest photos submitted thus far.
  • Engineers at MIT have repurposed a 19th-century photography technique to make stretchy, color-changing films.
  • A wedding photography company declared bankruptcy, leaving hundreds of couples without wedding photos or a photographer for an upcoming wedding.

  • Register for a free sun printing session at Photoworks this Sunday from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. to create cyanotype shadowgrams.
  • As the iPhone turns 15, more than a dozen Associated Press photographers across the world were invited to share an image taken with their phone and share some thoughts on the impact of smartphones on photography.
  • The International Photography Awards announced the winners of the One Shot category.
  • As more users grow dissatisfied and frustrated with Instagram, apps like BeReal look to fill the void of what once was.
  • The United States Court of Appeals ruled in favor of the copyright holder over images featuring Picasso’s paintings that have been part of a decades long legal battle.
  • Of the more than a million photographs Ferdinando Scianna has taken, he considers about 50 good and states that his decades long obsession with photography is over today.
  • Drew Buckley has been capturing puffin breeding season on the 720-acres of Pembrokeshire’s Skomer Island.

The show was originally slated to come down this Sunday, but it’ll stay up a bit longer; more updates to follow soon.   • You’ve probably already seen the stunning images from the James Webb telescope; this site compares these newer images with ones taken by the Hubble.
  • The 2022 Audubon Photography Awards includes a Top 100, spreading the love beyond the eight official winners and five honorable mentions.
  • Photoworks is compiling memories and condolences for fine art photographer, mentor, and educator Bruce Falkinburg who passed away earlier this month.
  • Join APA | DC tomorrow from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. for a photo assistant workshop in Hyattsville, $5 for APA members and $15 for non-members.
  • Egypt has relaxed their street photography ban, while restrictions remain in place for photographing children and commercial photography.
  • Leica Camera announced the twelve finalists for the 42nd annual Leica Oskar Barnack Award (LOBA) photography competition.
  • Petworth Neighborhood Library is hosting a photo contest for kids ages 5-12. Entries are due by July 29 at 6 p.m., and winning photos will be displayed in the library.

  • APA | DC is launching a new grant for emerging and established photographers who self-identify as LGBTQIAP+. The deadline to apply is July 20.
  • Leica is expanding “THE WORLD DESERVES WITNESSES” campaign with an open call for submissions in two categories. Entry is free with a deadline of September 30.
  • “American Silence: The Photographs of Robert Adams,” is on view at the National Gallery of Art through October 2.
  • View the 2022 shortlist for the London’s Royal Observatory Greenwich Astronomy Photographer of the Year competition.
  • Visual artist Mário Macilau captures social and environmental challenges in Mozambique, stating photography is the language he chooses to express himself and what he sees around him.
  • Paul Killeen captured ghostly flying birds to win the World Landscape Photography competition.
  • Profoto users can take part in the soft vs hard light challenge for a chance to win a lighting kit worth $2,000.
