Thank you so much to everyone who joined us at our opening of the 13th annual Exposed DC Photography Show! You can view the exhibit through February 24 (free admission); hours are posted on Touchstone Gallery’s website and in our opening night wrap-up. We’re so grateful to our awesome community and all those who help make the show possible year after year. Thank you all!

  • Join WPOW: Women Photojournalists of Washington for happy hour tomorrow from 4:30-7:30 p.m. at District Commons.
  • Don’t forget to submit your best images exploring the human condition to Focus on the Story’s competition. Stay tuned for more updates about the festival too.
  • A black leopard has been photographed in Africa for the first time in almost 100 years.
  • The New Yorker explores Priya Ramrakha’s work as a conflict photographer in Africa during the 50s and 60s.
  • Annie Leibovitz revisits her early years in a new exhibit in Los Angeles.
  • Photoworks at Glen Echo Park is offering all sorts of classes this spring and summer, including some taught by Robb Hill who’s featured in our 2019 exhibit! View the full list and sign up here.
  • Australian photographer Lisa Saad may be stripped of a major award following an investigation by the Australian Institute of Professional Photography.
  • Our partner organization, goARtful, just launched a crowdfunding campaign. The arts platform offers people and companies the option to rent or buy high quality local art and includes a collection by Exposed DC photographers.

We can’t wait to kick off our 13th annual show and celebrate local photography with everyone next week! Do you have your advance tickets for the February 13th opening reception yet? Grab them now and join us at Touchstone Gallery to see all the winning images on display, enjoy an open bar, and connect with photographers and art lovers!

  • Head to the Leica Store DC on February 15 for the opening reception of Metropolis by Alan Schaller, 7-9 p.m. 
  • Focus on the Story wants to see your work that makes a difference, explores the human condition, or draws attention to underreported stories. Both series and single image entries are being accepted through March 13, and winners will receive cash prizes and more.
  • Did a seal eat your vacation photos? Now THAT is a question you don’t hear often, but a biologist in New Zealand is genuinely asking as she tries to return a USB drive that was discovered in seal scat.
  • Submit your photos for the next Community Collective pop-up show which will be held at the Creative Hands Studio on Sunday, March 10. The theme is “Light,” and the deadline for entries is next Friday, February 15.
  • Victoria Pickering and Miki Jourdan, Exposed alum and featured photographers in our 2019 exhibit, have a new website called The Uncommon District. Check out their latest post to find out more about Jennifer Shannon, a performance artist featured in two photos in this year’s show.
  • Jane Franklin and Fax Ayres combine dance and photography in the upcoming Second Glance at Alexandria’s Athenaeum.
  • Stop Motion is seeking analog photography from the D.C. metro area for their next photo slideshow.
  • The Photography Show has launched a new campaign, Women Who Photo, to highlight female photographers and filmmakers making an impact across various areas of the industry.

  • The Washington Post is hiring a travel photo editor.
  • Today is the last day to get early bird pricing on tickets for the 2019 WPOW Seminar and Portfolio Review.
  • Focus on the Story is accepting proposals to present at the 2019 festival. If you have an exceptional photography project or an idea for a talk that will inspire and engage fellow photographers, submit it for the chance to join the stellar lineup and get complimentary registration to the festival, three nights of hotel accommodations, and a travel voucher of up to $500.
  • Join Exposed alum Amanda Archibald tomorrow for a Fancy Camera Basics workshop to learn about composing the frame beautifully, choosing the appropriate settings for your camera, understanding how exposures are made, and much more, 10 a.m., $75.
  • PDN magazine’s annual photography contest closes this Monday.
  • Winners of the British Photography Awards were announced earlier this week.
  • Join the AU School of Public Affairs’ Justice Programs Office on February 6 for an event centered around Richard Ross’ new photography exhibit focused on youth in the juvenile justice system, 5:30-8:15 p.m.
  • Javier Riera infuses landscapes with geometric shapes through light installations that he then photographs. The results are surreal and beautiful.

Earlier this week, we announced the winning images from our 2019 photo contest. Thanks again to everyone who entered the contest and congratulations to the winners! Mark your calendars for the opening reception on Wednesday, February 13 when you can see all of the photos on display at Touchstone Gallery. In the meantime, we’ve got some links for you.

  • RSVP to join Leica Product Specialist, John Kreidler on Saturday from 1-4 p.m. for a portrait session of you with your “Object of Desire.”
  • On Saturday night, after the Women’s March, the Social Photo Show – Images of Protest & Dissent will feature the work of 18 amateur photographers as a one-night pop-up gallery in D.C., 7-10 p.m., $19. 
  • The Capitol Hill Art League and Hill Center Galleries are co-sponsoring a show focusing on the beauty of all trees and are accepting entries through February 1.
  • Place and displacement intertwine the series House to House and Suburbs by Pat Howard and Andy Currie in the latest exhibit at Photoworks, opening next week with a reception and gallery talk on Saturday, Jan. 26, 5-7 p.m.
  • Framebridge is opening a new location on 14th Street. 
  • A Philadelphia-based photographer created a time-lapse video using video and photos taken by astronauts onboard the International Space Station.
  • The Museum of Fine Arts in Boston is exploring Ansel Adams in a new light with an exhibit of over 100 of his photographs as well as images by 23 contemporary photographers whose work helps show how things have continued to change and reinterprets well-known scenes.

  • Head to Photoworks at Glen Echo Park for the first Coffee & Critique of 2019 on Sunday, 10 a.m. to noon, free.
  • THIS SIDE OF SILVER: an art pop-up show at Aperture, a new apartment community in Reston, will feature local photographers among other artists, tomorrow from 2-5 p.m.
  • Have great photos of gardens in or around D.C.? The 13th Annual Washington Gardener Magazine Photo Contest is accepting entries through January 22.
  • The newly-opened Lumen Museum sits amidst the Dolomites, designed to showcase mountain photography amidst mountains themselves.
  • The Flickering Treasures exhibit on view at the National Building Museum showcases the history of the movie-going experience in Baltimore over the years.
  • British naturalist Anna Atkins was the first to use photography for scientific illustration in her magnum opus, British Algae. Some of her research and work is featured in an exhibition at the New York Public Library.
  • A rare book dealer has spent the last 30 years acquiring pictures of China at the dawn of photography, from albumen prints to wet plates.
  • WIRED seeks to find out how photography affects us in their latest episode of Tech Effects, covering selfie distortion, emotional memories, and more.
