Thank you to everyone who submitted to our annual photography contest. We’re so grateful to each and every one of you for being part of the amazing D.C. photography community. We’ll be reviewing the submissions and announcing the winners later this month. In the meantime, remember you can always share your images with us and each other by submitting to our group on Flickr and tagging #exposeddc on Instagram.

  • The National Museum of Women in the Arts is temporarily closed to the public for a major renovation, but their first off-site exhibition “Positive Fragmentation” can be viewed at the American University Museum at the Katzen Arts Center through May 22. The exhibit includes over 150 works by 21 artists who use fragmentation to explore concepts such as gender, race, and the environment.
  • An amateur photographer who found himself at the center of the Covid-19 pandemic shares how he documented the response in Newcastle starting in March 2020 when council managers were called for a briefing.
  • Artist Cecil McDonald Jr. explores the power of representation in photography through a video lecture series.
  • The 2022 FotoEvidence Workshop will be held virtually March 4-6 with a deadline to apply of February 10. The goal of the workshop is to provide photographers with the skill to undertake challenging assignments and to ensure photographers have a clear understanding of ethical guidelines and can be hired with confidence by NGOs.
  • Photoworks is hosting a virtual artist talk with the makers of “2020 Unmasked” on February 9 at 7:00 p.m.
  • Polar bears move into an abandoned Arctic weather station on Russia’s Wrangel Island, a nature reserve under Unesco protection.

We’re coming up on the last few days to enter our annual photography contest! You have until Sunday night at 11:59 p.m. to submit your best images showcasing the D.C. metro area for a chance to be part of our 16th annual exhibition celebrating local photography. We can’t wait to see this city of ours through the lenses of the people who live, work, and love here!

  • The group exhibition “RE:” at Studio Gallery closes tomorrow. Say hello to featured artist Shedrick Pelt who will be at the gallery all day Saturday.
  • Stop by the National Gallery of Art to catch “The New Woman Behind the Camera” exhibit before it closes on Sunday to see images from more than 120 international photographers from the 1920s to the 1950s.
  • Apple’s macro photography Shot on iPhone Challenge for iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max users runs through February 16.
  • A new photography-oriented adventure game is all about snapping photos in a magical, monochrome world.
  • Join STREETMEETDC at 10:00 a.m. tomorrow in Columbia Heights to shoot and then head to Wonderland Ballroom for brunch and a photo editing session.
  • The Baltimore Museum of Art acquired 54 works of art including a photograph by surrealist artist Kati Horna.
  • Tag your Instagram photos with #ArtatMetrobarDC if you’d like to participate in our monthly projection exhibitions at metrobar co-curated with Focus on the Story.

  • Danish photographer Carsten Egevang has been documenting the landscape, animals, and people of Greenland for almost 30 years.
  • The 2022 Audubon Photography Awards is accepting entries through March 9.
  • Aldo Chacon’s personal project “Nike’s World” tells pop culture stories through staged scenes with sneakers.
  • Minolta launched a new hybrid digital, instant camera that prints credit card sized photos.
  • The Associated Press is launching a nonfungible token (NFT) marketplace with releases starting on January 31 for varying prices.
  • Creative Theory Agency, a culture focused marketing agency based in D.C., is hiring.
  • The SIGMA 60th anniversary contest for college students closes tomorrow at 11:59 p.m. Four film and four still photography entries will each be awarded a $7,500 scholarship prize.

Hope everyone stayed safe and warm during the snow this week–our first major snow event here in years! Capital Weather Gang staff and readers captured some beautiful wintry scenes around the region. You may recognize a few familiar names in the captions and may even want to consider entering stellar snow pics of your own to our annual photo contest before the deadline on January 30!

  • The 16th Annual Washington Gardener Magazine Photo Contest is accepting entries through January 21.
  • Iconic images captured by NASA photographers in the 1960s are currently available on Artnet Auctions.
  • Photoworks’ 2021 Reflection Video recaps events and photos from last year. There’s still time to register for upcoming winter classes too!
  • Don’t forget to tag your Instagram images with #ArtatMetrobarDC for a chance to be part of our monthly projection exhibits at metrobar, co-curated with Focus on the Story.
  • Andrew McCarthy documented Comet Leonard over the Arizona horizon in a composite of 25 separate shots.
  • The 28th annual Harbin Ice Festival opened this week in northeastern China with huge lighted sculptures made of ice.
  • An Israeli wildlife photographer captured a flock of birds forming the shape of a spoon complete with a heap of sugar.
