  • Launched six years ago, Women Photograph now consists of 1,600 photographers from more than 100 countries. A new book features a collection of work by 100 members.
  • Fernando Braga captured lightning striking the iconic Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro.
  • Voting is open through March 14 for the RSPCA’s Young Photographer People’s Choice Awards, a competition for young photographers.
  • Head to Photoworks Gallery tomorrow from 5:00-7:00 p.m. for the opening reception of “The Mind’s Eye” exhibit featuring the work of students from two Montgomery County high schools.
  • You can also RSVP to join Photoworks online Sunday at 10:00 a.m. for the free, monthly Photo Matters session on the topic of “Summer Is Icumen In.”
  • The 2023 Leica Women Foto Project Awardees were announced this week.
  • The World Nature Photography awards 2022 received entries from 45 countries. The grand prize winner captured a crocodile lurking in the mud in Zimbabwe.
  • Photographer Tommy Kha frames his own American South with portraits that blend his Asian heritage and family history with the mythology of the South.
  • Join APA | DC for happy hour on Thursday, March 16 from 5:30-8:00 p.m. at St Vincent Wine.
  • Victoria Barnes is teaching a flower photography workshop at Made in ALX tomorrow, 2:00 p.m., $40.

We had a great time connecting with new folks and reconnecting with long-timers as well. Congratulations once again to the winners of this year’s contest; we look forward to celebrating local photography with you all at the 17th annual Exposed DC show later this year.   • “Variety Show: A Photo Ensemble” by Creative Platform, a photography group featuring nine photographers, will open at Gallery B in Bethesda soon. Join them for an opening reception on March 11 from 4-6 p.m.
  • Photoworks has released its full list of spring and summer classes.
  • Astronomers have released a gargantuan survey of the Milky Way, using data from the Dark Energy Camera Plane Survey taken at optical and near-infrared wavelengths.
  • Shortlisted entries and finalists in the annual Sony World Photography Awards’ 10 professional categories have been announced.
  • Multiple Exposures Gallery’s monthly photography critique is this Sunday from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
  • The top prize for the National Geographic “Pictures of the Year” contest captured a bald eagle swooping in to steal a perch on a tree log in Alaska.
  • The northern lights seem to be putting on quite the display this year, according to photographers on the Isle of Man and these two pilots who incorporated an extra loop into their flight path to make sure passengers on both sides of the planes got a view.
  • The Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation Prize has just announced the four shortlisted photographers that will appear in the 2023 exhibition.
  • The winners of the Washington Gardener Magazine’s 2023 Garden Photo Contest were announced last month.

We’ll be announcing the winners of our annual contest next week! Check back for the official announcement and then join us on Wednesday, March 1 for a celebratory happy hour at 801 Restaurant & Bar from 6-8 p.m. We’ll catch up in person (finally!) and toast to the winners. Looking forward to seeing everyone and sharing our love for local photography!

  • Tomorrow is the last day to catch the DC Street Photography Collective’s “Hiding in Plain Sight” exhibit at Project Create Arts Center. Join them for a closing party and see the winners of their open call on display along with members’ work.
  • Reserve a spot to join Exposed alum Messay Shoakena at Photoworks tomorrow from 2:00-4:00 p.m. for an artist talk and demonstration.
  • Kieth Kozloff’s “Veiled Memories” exhibit opens at the Park View Gallery at Glen Echo with a reception on February 25, 6:00-8:00 p.m.
  • The National Gallery of Art exhibit “This is Britain” consists of about 45 recently acquired prints and some photo magazines from the 1970s and 1980s.
  • Cheryl Miller filed a copyright infringement claim against an artist who allegedly replicated her 1980 photograph as a painting.
  • The Plants for Birds entries in the 2022 Audubon Photography Awards show the connection between birds and native plants.
  • Reserve a spot to join Shedrick Pelt at the DC History Center to celebrate the release of his new book “District Postcard Views” on February 24, 5:00-7:00 p.m., free.
  • The 16 largest photography companies in the world have just been revealed with Sony overtaking Canon and a few other surprises.
  • An art gallery owner is under investigation for defrauding clients, with $1.6 million worth of photos vanishing.

Now onto our usual weekly round-up, including lots of great photography events happening this weekend.

  • Leica Store DC is hosting a modeling photography demo with a studio setup and cameras to try tomorrow from 11:00 a.m. to 1 p.m., free.
  • The DC Street Photography Collective is hosting a conversation with their member (and Exposed alum) Sofia Sebastian tomorrow at Project Create Arts Space at 2:30 p.m. in conjunction with their “Hiding in Plain Sight” exhibition that runs through Feb. 18.
  • Also tomorrow, head to Gallery Y for the Waves of Joy artist talk from 3:00-5:00 p.m. which will includes photographers from the “Dap Is A Love Language” exhibit.
  • A bear discovered a camera used to monitor wildlife in Boulder, Colorado and proceeded to pose for about 400 selfies.
  • Chronophoto is a free online game that has you guess the year five random photos were taken.
  • Joyce Dopkeen, the first woman hired by The New York Times to be a full-time staff photographer in 1973, died this week. She devoted her entire career to photojournalism.
  • Since 2017, Women Photograph has been recording the bylines of lead photos on the front pages of eight international newspapers, noting fewer women and nonbinary photographers appeared in 2022 than the year before.
  • A photograph of the Milky Way above the ruins of a Tudor mansion won the top prize in an astrophotography competition.

  • Winners of the Art of Building competition have been announced.
  • An app for webcams and streaming introduced a feature that uses AI to make it look like your eyes are always looking at the camera.
  • Wonders of Street View lets you explore random places captured by Google Street View.
  • For the past 40 years, documentary photographer Roger Tiley has been capturing miners and the communities they live in as their way of life slowly disappeared.
  • Three Leica Women Photo awardees share their career-changing experience.
  • The DC Street Photography Collective’s (DCSPC’s) “Hiding in Plain Sight” exhibit runs through February 18 at Project Create Arts Center. Local photographers can share their five best street photos on Instagram with the #dc_spc_2023show hashtag by February 4 to respond to DCSPC’s open call.
