Sheep on the Mall by Bill Coyle
Sheep on the Mall by Bill Coyle

I’m trying to find the words to describe how much I enjoy this image by Bill Coyle. The foggy, quiet backdrop of the Basque country with grazing sheep is very different than the energetic chaos of the Folklife Festival on the National Mall. The moment of the girl eating her ice cream while the boy waits impatiently provides a hint of what is behind the artificial severity of the printed picture.

I love learning how people see things. Each week I am privileged to scroll through our Instagram feed and study how each photographer notices light and objects differently—it’s one of the things I enjoy most about photography. I find Andrew Golda’s framing of the window and use of the exterior light so interesting and something I might not have noticed.

I love scrolling through the Exposed DC feed and seeing so many cleverly framed images. Ellie Van Houtte often uses her camera to find scenes that form graphic or abstract happenings. In this photograph the Choctaw Tribe walk in a curved light leading the eye by large reflections and refracted light.

It was difficult to pick today’s In Frame, but this image took me to an unexpected and much needed place of comfort and security. Brooke Linkow’s beautiful image and poetic caption, “And just like that it receded into the fog of a dream…,” lulls my mental tension and I am overcome with a sense of calm. I imagine myself floating above the lake feeling moisture from the fog and lake on my face, receding to the dream Brooke describes.

"Werthy of a soaking" by Tim Brown
Werthy of a soaking by Tim Brown

The comical moment where Nationals catcher Wilson Ramos dumps an ice bucket over his teammate Jayson Werth almost feels staged. Photographers huddle energetically, hoping to get their shot, as television reporter MASN Dan smiles and walks toward the freezing baseball player. Tim Brown’s framing makes this slapstick scene even more fantastic.
