Have you entered our annual photography contest yet? You have until Wednesday, January 9 at midnight to get your entries submitted! Save the date for our next happy hour on January 15 at 801 Restaurant & Bar, where we will be kicking off another year of celebrating local photography and toasting to the winners of the contest.

  • Vox pays tribute to women and non-binary photographers in their 2018 year in review. The gallery includes Exposed alum Kaitlin Jencso’s image of a Christine Blasey Ford supporter outside the Kavanaugh hearings.
  • Registration for the Focus on the Story festival is now open! Take advantage of the flash sale that ends today to get a great discount.
  • Join the founder of Washington, DC History & Culture tomorrow at the Newseum for a group visit focused on photography and photojournalism. Please note that attendees will need to purchase their own tickets for admission to the Newseum.
  • The Independent shares how photographers captured 2018’s most compelling moments in a two-part series (part two here). 
  • Pete Mauney began taking time-lapse photographs of planes coming and going at night after photographing fireflies reminded him of his childhood observations of airplanes circling Manhattan. 
  • Photographer Li Zhensheng worked at a local newspaper in northeastern China in the 1960s, taking over 30,000 images that document a turbulent time in modern Chinese history that the ruling Communist Party tries to hide and that he is trying to share with his fellow Chinese.
  • Photo District News shares the technology and trends they are excited about for 2019.

  • The Guardian has its top 10 photography shows of 2018.
  • PBS News Hour takes a look at photographers Wendy Watriss and Fred Baldwin’s documentation of rural America over the years.
  • The Community Collective’s next pop-up series featuring 16 photographers will be Sunday, December 30 at Creative Hands Studio at 52 O St., 3-6 p.m.
  • Steve McCurry joined Kate Snow for a 15-minute segment on NBC Nightly News to talk about his career and how he got into photography.
  • Focus on the Story has announced the initial lineup for the 2019 festival. Stay tuned for updates and registration to open soon.
  • Verónica Sanchis Bencomo talks with The New York Times about creating Foto Féminas, an online community for Latin American women photographers.
  • If you’re looking for some holiday photography ideas, an Olympus designer and photographer shared his tutorial for creating Christmas tree shaped bokeh.

In case you missed the exciting news, our 13th annual photography contest is officially open for entries! What better time than now to reminisce about the last year while perusing your photos to find the perfect ones to submit. Entries are accepted through January 9, 2019. Now back to your regularly scheduled Friday Links:

  • Head to Big Bear Cafe on Tuesday for Stop Motion’s quarterly photography slideshow, 7-9 p.m. There will be a printed publication available for sale as well.
  • Winners have been announced for the Royal Society Publishing Photography Competition, which celebrates the power of photography to capture science.
  • Ragnar Axelsson is photographing the disappearing glaciers of Iceland, an experience that he says can be “like being on a different planet.”
  • Photoworks hosts the first solo exhibition of work from Frank Van Riper’s book, Recovered Memory: New York & Paris 1960-1980. A reception, gallery talk, and book signing will be held tonight from 6-8 p.m.
  • The British Journal of Photography explores how photography is used to shed light on health-related matters.
  • Peter Jackson’s new World War I documentary adds color and realism to original footage shot in black and white on hand-cranked cameras.
  • Join Robert K. Headley and Exposed alum Pat Padua for their “Historic Movie Theaters of Washington, DC” book signing event at AFI Silver Theatre this Saturday, 4:30-7:30 p.m.
  • Annie Leibovitz answers the 10 questions she is asked most frequently.

The 13th annual Exposed DC photography contest opens Thursday, December 6 at noon. Get ready to enter all your amazing photos showcasing life in our nation’s capital, and join us at our monthly happy hour that evening from 6-8 p.m. at Finn McCool’s!

  • Join Exposed alum Amanda Archibald for a food styling and photography workshop at Steadfast Supply tomorrow, 11:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m., $35. You can also head to the Ditto Tree Farm for a holiday pop up shop on Sunday where she’ll be hosting a free mobile photography workshop from 12:00-1:00 p.m. and then taking holiday portrait photos from 1:00-3:00 p.m., $35.
  • Instagram is testing ways to modify the way profiles appear, including removing total number of posts and moving follower info further down.
  • Cecilia Paredes camouflages herself amidst bold patterns in her series of self-portraits.
  • Three-time World Press Photo winner Lu Guang has gone missing in Xinjiang, with reports he has been detained by national security officers.
  • A new book celebrates the history of hip hop through contact sheets that show iconic images amidst other outtakes along with interviews and essays from the photographers.
  • A wedding photographer in Dallas illustrates how NOT to be a professional, getting arrested for public intoxication.
  • Photo District News discusses photography post-production and how to handle the process and estimate the costs.
  • New portraits of all 209 women members of parliament, shot exclusively by women photographers, will be displayed in Portcullis House, free and open to the public for viewing.
  • RSVP to get on the list for Focus on the Story’s holiday party and print exchange; provide one of your favorite images that will be printed and displayed at the party and then take home someone else’s at the end of the night.

We’ll be taking next week off, so we’ll wish everyone an early Happy Thanksgiving and remind you about some events happening the last week in November. Our annual contest will also be opening in early December, so stay tuned for more news about that soon!

  • Sign up for a time slot at Leica Pro Discovery Day this Sunday to have John Kreidler create and print your portrait with both the Leica S3 and the Leica SL. Compare the results to see the difference between medium and 35mm format cameras.
  • The National Gallery of Art hosts a curator talk this Sunday focused on the new Gordon Parks exhibit, 2 p.m.
  • The Community Collective’s inaugural pop-up series featuring 15 pieces by Exposed alum Marci Lindsay will be this Sunday at 52 O Street Studios, 3:00-6:00 p.m.
  • Documentary photographer Daniella Zalcman and photographer Matika Wilbur of the Swinomish and Tulalip peoples of coastal Washington will explore different perspectives on modern Native communities through powerful photography, on November 27 at National Geographic, 7:30-9:00 p.m., $25.
  • Join ASMP DC for Chris Buck’s artist talk at the Smithsonian American Art Museum on November 28, 7:00-8:30 p.m. The event is free, but tickets are required. Book signing and meet and greet to follow.
  • Head to the Leica Store DC for a political optics photography talk with photojournalist David Butow on November 29, 6:30-7:30 p.m.
  • Earlier this week, Sony announced the winners of its new Alpha Female Creators-in-Residence program.
  • Get a glimpse of the series that made the shortlist for the second year of the PHMuseum Women Photographer Grant. Winners will be announced on December 4.
