Already missing the 13th Annual Exposed DC Photography Show? You can still purchase many of the photos from the exhibit or get an exhibition magazine. We’re also excited to get to work on our next exhibit in the Crystal City Fotowalk! The Spring 2019 exhibit will be a color study: exploring how color is seen, captured, and used through photography. Submit your best images by Sunday, March 10 for a chance to be part of the show!

  • This coming Thursday from 6-8 p.m., IA&A at Hillyer and the Embassy of Switzerland are presenting a talk and photo exhibition featuring the co-founders of the independent journal “Immersions,” which tells stories through narrative, reporting, images, art, and photos in large-format magazines.
  • Also on Thursday, the Driskell Center will be having a panel discussion in conjunction with the exhibition, Posing Beauty in African American Culture, 5-7 p.m. 
  • Don’t forget to submit your analog photography from the D.C. metro area to Stop Motion Volume 5. Deadline for entries is March 8.
  • Leica Store DC and 202filmcollective are hosting a photography print exchange on Sunday, March 10. RSVP to sign up for a spot as space is limited.
  • The Guardian explores the role of photography in video games and how it is becoming more directly incorporated into games by some developers.
  • Apple announced the winners of its “Shot on iPhone” challenge which were selected by a judging panel that included Pete Souza among others.
  • Photographers with around five years or less experience can submit work to the Spring 2019 issue of Emerging Photographer. The deadline to enter is March 4, and the entry fee is $30/series (3-10 images).
  • Critical Exposure is hiring a Program Manager and Program Coordinator.
  • The Mighty, Mighty Half Truth – Version 12, a pop up photography show, will be at Jackie Lee’s tomorrow, 7 p.m.

This weekend is your final chance to see the 2019 Exposed DC Photography Show! Admission is free, the gallery is lovely, and the photographs are beautiful. Join us on Sunday at 3 p.m. for an artist meet and greet and a closing celebration! You can purchase the photos at the closing or via our online marketplace, and you can also get a copy of our exhibition program featuring all the winning images for $10 or order it online here. Hope to see you there! 

  • The Fax Ayres lightpainting exhibit at the Athenaeum closes this weekend. There will be a gallery talk on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. where you can meet the artist and learn about his process and inspiration.
  • Nominees for the 2019 World Press Photo Contest have been announced. The 62nd edition of the contest introduces a major new award for the World Press Photo Story of the Year. 
  • Earlier this month, Washington Gardener Magazine announced the winners of their 13th annual photo contest.
  • Head to the National Gallery of Art today at 12:30 p.m. to view Gordon Parks’ early documentaries in the East Building Auditorium.
  • Early registration for Focus on the Story’s 2019 festival ends February 28, so book now to save $55 off the regular registration rate. 
  • View some of the photos taken by NASA’s Opportunity rover during its 14 years spent roaming Mars.
  • Peruse the finalists for the National Geographic Traveller Photography competition and find out the winners on February 26.
  • Check out Capital Photography Center’s upcoming schedule and Washington Photo Safari’s calendar of events to sign up for photography classes and excursions.

We’re so grateful to our awesome community and all those who help make the show possible year after year. Thank you all!

  • Join WPOW: Women Photojournalists of Washington for happy hour tomorrow from 4:30-7:30 p.m. at District Commons.
  • Don’t forget to submit your best images exploring the human condition to Focus on the Story’s competition. Stay tuned for more updates about the festival too.
  • A black leopard has been photographed in Africa for the first time in almost 100 years.
  • The New Yorker explores Priya Ramrakha’s work as a conflict photographer in Africa during the 50s and 60s.
  • Annie Leibovitz revisits her early years in a new exhibit in Los Angeles.
  • Photoworks at Glen Echo Park is offering all sorts of classes this spring and summer, including some taught by Robb Hill who’s featured in our 2019 exhibit! View the full list and sign up here.
  • Australian photographer Lisa Saad may be stripped of a major award following an investigation by the Australian Institute of Professional Photography.
  • Our partner organization, goARtful, just launched a crowdfunding campaign. The arts platform offers people and companies the option to rent or buy high quality local art and includes a collection by Exposed DC photographers.

We can’t wait to kick off our 13th annual show and celebrate local photography with everyone next week! Do you have your advance tickets for the February 13th opening reception yet? Grab them now and join us at Touchstone Gallery to see all the winning images on display, enjoy an open bar, and connect with photographers and art lovers!

  • Head to the Leica Store DC on February 15 for the opening reception of Metropolis by Alan Schaller, 7-9 p.m. 
  • Focus on the Story wants to see your work that makes a difference, explores the human condition, or draws attention to underreported stories. Both series and single image entries are being accepted through March 13, and winners will receive cash prizes and more.
  • Did a seal eat your vacation photos? Now THAT is a question you don’t hear often, but a biologist in New Zealand is genuinely asking as she tries to return a USB drive that was discovered in seal scat.
  • Submit your photos for the next Community Collective pop-up show which will be held at the Creative Hands Studio on Sunday, March 10. The theme is “Light,” and the deadline for entries is next Friday, February 15.
  • Victoria Pickering and Miki Jourdan, Exposed alum and featured photographers in our 2019 exhibit, have a new website called The Uncommon District. Check out their latest post to find out more about Jennifer Shannon, a performance artist featured in two photos in this year’s show.
  • Jane Franklin and Fax Ayres combine dance and photography in the upcoming Second Glance at Alexandria’s Athenaeum.
  • Stop Motion is seeking analog photography from the D.C. metro area for their next photo slideshow.
  • The Photography Show has launched a new campaign, Women Who Photo, to highlight female photographers and filmmakers making an impact across various areas of the industry.

  • The Washington Post is hiring a travel photo editor.
  • Today is the last day to get early bird pricing on tickets for the 2019 WPOW Seminar and Portfolio Review.
  • Focus on the Story is accepting proposals to present at the 2019 festival. If you have an exceptional photography project or an idea for a talk that will inspire and engage fellow photographers, submit it for the chance to join the stellar lineup and get complimentary registration to the festival, three nights of hotel accommodations, and a travel voucher of up to $500.
  • Join Exposed alum Amanda Archibald tomorrow for a Fancy Camera Basics workshop to learn about composing the frame beautifully, choosing the appropriate settings for your camera, understanding how exposures are made, and much more, 10 a.m., $75.
  • PDN magazine’s annual photography contest closes this Monday.
  • Winners of the British Photography Awards were announced earlier this week.
  • Join the AU School of Public Affairs’ Justice Programs Office on February 6 for an event centered around Richard Ross’ new photography exhibit focused on youth in the juvenile justice system, 5:30-8:15 p.m.
  • Javier Riera infuses landscapes with geometric shapes through light installations that he then photographs. The results are surreal and beautiful.
