  • PortraitMeetDC is heading to Jones Point Park on Sunday from 3:00-6:00 p.m.
  • The winner of the creative open category of the Sony World Photography Awards is refusing his prize after revealing the work was actually an AI creation, a cheeky test of the competition.

  • Pentax announced a DSLR designed exclusively for black and white photography.
  • Award-winning photographer Jeremy Cowart will attempt to produce 10,000 original photography-based NFTs in approximately 20 minutes in front of a live audience.
  • Godland, a new Icelandic/Danish drama, depicts the struggles of being a camera owner in the 19th century.
  • The 2023 Women Photograph Grant Cycle is open for applications through May 15 with $35,000 available in project funding to support the work of women and nonbinary photographers.

  • Did you know there’s a World Photographic Cup? They recently announced results of their 10th competition.
  • Catch episodes of the Arnold Newman Lecture Series on Photography, a forum for leading photographers to discuss contemporary issues in the medium, on YouTube with Sunil Gupta, Dawoud Bey, Lorna Simpson, Teju Cole, and Fazal Sheikh.
  • Applications are open through April 21 for the first edition of FotoFilmic’s annual mentoring program.
  • Join Mac Cosgrove-Davies for a shadowgram sunprinting workshop at Arlington’s Central Library tomorrow at 10:30 a.m., free, first-come, first-served until capacity is reached.
  • The Maryland Photography Alliance is hosting the 2023 Odyssey of Light webinar this weekend, $35 with a MPA member discount available as well.
  • The 2022 Architectural Photography Awards Photo of the Year prize was awarded to Gerry O’Leary for his trippy image of the Maraya Concert Hall, a giant mirrored building in the desert of Saudi Arabia.
  • The New York Times breaks down the latest on artificial intelligence generated imagery.
  • Also, the Copyright Office has issued a new policy statement that clarifies its practices for examining and registering works that contain material generated by artificial intelligence.

  • DC Home Rule 50 — a photography exhibition commemorating the 50th anniversary of the District of Columbia Home Rule act by exploring the urgent themes of self-governance, full citizenship, free elections, and DC statehood — opens tonight at the DC History Center, 5:00-7:00 p.m., free.
  • Head to the East Building Auditorium at the National Gallery of Art tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. for a special program highlighting short films including “Perfect Image?” that exposes stereotypical images of Black women and explores women’s own ideas of self-worth and “John Davies: Exploring a Sense of Place in the Landscape,” a portrait of the photographer and their process.
  • Photoworks is hosting a photo flea market on Saturday, April 22. You can sign up as a seller for a fee of $10 per table.
  • Join Mac Cosgrove-Davies at the Arlington Central Library tomorrow morning as he demonstrates how tintype portraits are made using the wet plate collodion process.
  • Aperture and Google’s Creator Labs announced the second season of the Creator Labs Photo Fund, an initiative to support image makers.
  • Polaroid’s limited edition Reclaimed Blue film was an “experimental fluke.”
  • The 2022 Architectural Photography Awards Photo of the Year shortlist has been released.
  • If you’ve been to the Tidal Basin to see the cherry blossoms or even just seen photos from others, chances are you’ve seen Stumpy, the struggling cherry tree that has gained quite a following over recent years.

  • The regional winners of the 2023 World Press Photo awards have been announced.
  • Call to Earth, a CNN editorial series about the environmental challenges facing our planet, explores 10 photographs that made the world wake up to climate change.
  • Fujifilm is halting production of a range of color negative 35mm film as well as reversal film in both 35mm and 120 formats due to a shortage of raw materials.
  • Last week, a geomagnetic storm spawned brilliant northern lights as far south as Virginia, North Carolina, and Arizona.
