Friday Links

In this week’s edition of Friday links we’ve got beautiful transportation architecture, winning thievery, a city that’s too smoggy to photograph, and discount pooch adoption.

  • One of our favorite local photographers, Pat Padua, is putting together a list of movies about photographers. Have you seen them all? Got any more suggestions for him?
  • “We are almost at the point where one has to seriously ask if a photo doesn’t get any likes did it ever really happen?” PDN Online interviews Chris Suspect (whose photos make it onto this site with some frequency).
  • WMATA’s got nothing on the Moscow metro stations.
  • Ouch: The winning photo in Samsung’s latest Instagram contest was stolen. Reminds us a little of Sherrie Levine’s “After Walker Evens” reappropriation exhibit.
  • Benedict Cumberbatch used paparazzi at his Sherlock set to send out a four-page message about government privacy invasions.
  • Try not to have an asthma attack while taking your photo in front of blue-sky backdrops in Hong Kong.
  • We all saw this coming: Canon’s new PowerShot has an instant “post to Facebook” button.
  • “Don’t show up wearing the clothes you slept in” and 18 other common sense ways to not become a hated photographer.
  • Aww, the Obamas have added to their squee-family. And tried to make up for not adopting a shelter pooch by donating an unknown sum to the Washington Humane Society, which is offering 25% off adoption fees through August, so now’s the time to get one of these ridiculously huggable creatures to add to your family.
  • Finally, your weekly tiger link: 10 Things You Didn’t Know About The Endangered Tiger.

There are several wonderfully absurd things about this photograph. First is the ICEE bear, positioned exactly in the frame to look as if he is really handing that drink to the photographer. The second is the person, almost the same size as the bear, but their top half is taken over by the plant. When you add in the bold colors of the food stand, the plant, the bear sign and the shoes of the person we can’t fully see, this image is a summer winner.

This week we have a dancer in the streets of D.C., rulings on two very different court cases involving the rights of photographers, beautiful photographs that look like sculptures, and of course goats and tigers — though not living together as best friends because that would break the internet.

  • Baby Tigers! Endangered baby tigers born at the National Zoo! There is even a a tiger cam.
  • National Geographic announced the winners of their Traveler Photo Contest.
  • The Capital Weather Gang breaks down how to tell if storm images are real or fake.
  • Cool photo of Washington Ballet performer Sun Chong as part of Jordan Matter’s Dancers Among Us series.
  • What would we do without YouTube? A 1988 lecture titled, Heinecken Explains Heinecken, has been unearthed for our viewing pleasure. The self proclaimed Paraphotographer, Robert Heinecken, shares some insight on his work.
  • A judge in NY state has ruled that artist Arne Svenson did not violate the privacy of his neighbors when he photographed them in their apartments. This is in stark contrast to the recent French ruling that stated photographer Yan Morvan breached his subjects’ rights to control their own image. The implications of that ruling may make it extremely difficult for photographers to publish work in France.
  • NPR took home two of the three prizes for Outstanding Environmental Journalism from the Society of Environmental Journalism. Photography is so much better on the radio.
  • You have never seen waves look the way photographer Pierre Carreau makes them look. His images present like glass sculptures.
  • NASA has a huge collection of free e-books online. If you can forgive the terrible formatting, there are some gems to be found, like Exploring Space with a Camera. You can delve into the technical aspects of space camera technology, or just look at the photos.
  • Seventy-five years after the original printing, MOMA is republishing “Walker Evans: American Photographs” and producing a new exhibit. The BBC has a nice piece on the work.
  • Don’t let the use of the H word scare you away, because these are beautiful food photographs.
  • Goats in a Cemetery is a better summer blockbuster than Snakes on a Plane.
  • Fotoweek DC announced their 2013 contest. Reminder that you can always find events like this on our calendar.

The timing of this image by Chris Suspect is wonderful, as are the contrasts. Yes, the man is much larger than the door frame but the color of his bright clothing pops out from the red, white, black and beige background. He also forms a large upside down V shape in the center of the photograph, while almost every other shape in the frame is a square or rectangle. The composition works for all of these reasons, but the most important may be that this is just plain funny.
