This is clearly not D.C., but it’s taken by, Bo Tan, a Chinese photographer currently based in the district. As a person and a photographer, I have particular interests: the colors green, blue, and orange, mountains, gas stations, and mid-afternoon sunlight that softens hues a little while still creating odd shadows. Bo’s image has all of that in a wonderfully framed scene.

I love that Exposed DC has the ability to illuminate places that local photographers travel and document. I’m excited to see my peers’ adventures on my screen, vicariously living through your pictures. Keep making clever frames my D.C. metro friends!

(And don’t forget to enter your photographs — of D.C. by D.C. photographers — in our annual contest before January 11.)

Cock by Mike Maguire

I’ve seen many images of Katharina Fritsch’s Hahn/Cock since it’s arrival to the National Gallery of Art’s newly renovated East Building this year. The opaque electrifying blue rooster is a magnet to the eye. It’s placed on the roof facing the city—keeping a close watch over the governing landscape. Mike Maguire’s image is a decisively composed frame, which depicts a woman in a yellow sweater and a friend gazing upon the monumental azure poultry. Mike’s photograph makes us feel as if we are witnessing the scene being captured and not simply looking at an image of a wonderfully weird bird.

Don’t forget to enter your best photos into our annual contest!

NMAAHC Nadir I by Flickr user ep_jhu

Ooh—this photo is satiating. Photographers and artists are gifts to society—they look up and down finding new ways of seeing a scene. Here Flickr user ep_jhu spies upon those below framing them in a grey box surrounded by blue rectangles. The lights create a cool flow of luminosity making me feel like I am looking down to the ocean floor.

This little girl’s excitement captures how I feel when I stumbled upon Wells Baum’s  Instagram feed. It’s a collection of trees, colorful shapes, and clever abstraction—it’s no surprise why I like it. This image is delightful in it’s spirit and wonderfully framed. Also, I really hope that is a drawing of an apple saying, “Avocado.”

Chess Match by Zach Kalman
Chess Match by Zach Kalman

I love this image. Not only did photographer Zach Kalman find an interesting scene he used the repetition of color and pattern to frame a more captivating picture. The red car, aqua car, red lights, aqua steps, and red car all keep my eyes bouncing around within the photograph.
