Waiting by Dennis Dimick. Officer monitoring entrance to parking lot at West Arlington Hall Park, Barcroft, Arlington Virginia. 7:02 a.m. December 23, 2015. (Arlington Hall 20151223-1651)
Waiting by Dennis Dimick

Sometimes when I’m browsing through our Flickr pool, I instantly see an image that really strikes me. This photograph by Dennis Dimick is one of those images. I can feel the humid air in Arlington, and sense the mood of the waiting police officer. His wait is not anxious anticipation — it’s a calm pause that happens early on dreary mornings when things are slow to start. I encourage everyone to look at  more of Dimick’s work on his Flickr page. He has a lot of other wonderful images.

Meanwhile, don’t forget our 10th annual photo contest is still open for entries. You have until January 6 to submit your top D.C.-area images!

This image by Instagram user @thatpma looks like an Impressionist painting. I’m really fond of photographs that require the viewer to stay longer with the image to discover what is depicted in the scene.

And don’t forget to submit your best D.C.-area images to our 10th annual photo contest!

Walking, Framed by Mark Andre
Walking, Framed by Mark Andre

I’m curious how long Mark Andre waited for his decisive moment because it’s so perfect. I not only love the patient craft of this image but that it is taken looking out a window. At first, I didn’t notice the reflections on the top of the photo but when I finally saw them I was really pleased.

I had an  interesting dilemma: I saw these two images and struggled to decide which one to pick. However, they are both by the same photographer, Shamila Chaudhary, and I decided to feature the images together. I am fascinated by her graphic sensibility, coupled with compelling uses of light and shadow. Chaudhary has a unique, instinctual eye and I hope to see more of her talent in our Flickr pool.

Don’t forget to submit your best D.C. images into our 10th annual photo contest – you only have three weeks left!

What an incredible capture by Flickr user Lane 4 Imaging. The Library of Congress has magnificent interiors and I love that this image shows nearly the whole scale from floor to ceiling.

Submit your best D.C. images into our 10th annual photo contest.
