  • Also on the animal front but less cute: wildlife photographer Tim Smith captured a picture of an alligator launching itself out of water.
  • A collection of aerial photographs taken during the Second World War have been opened to the public for the first time.
  • Exposed alum Robb Hill is teaching a 6-week narrative landscape course with Photoworks starting September 7 with a total cost of $400. Lots of other classes are starting up soon, so be sure to check the full schedule.
  • A glowing, prismatic nervous system of a sea star won the Global Image of the Year Scientific Light Microscopy Award.
  • A major Chinese photo agency is demanding an astrophotographer pay $12,000 to use his own photos after he posted his work to social media platform Weibo.
  • Roland L. Freeman, a resident of the District and photographer who documented Black life and culture for more than 50 years, died at 87.

  • It’s been a summer of extreme weather as documented in these images from July.
  • The Maryland Professional Photographers Association (MDPPA) is hosting an “Animal Metamorphosis” workshop on October 17 and 18 with Judy Reinford showing how to take images from vacation, zoo, nature, and client work and turn them into beautiful works of art. Limited in-person tickets are available, and early bird pricing is in effect through September 6.
  • One of our 2023 Best in Show judges, Briana Thomas, created a guide to Black art in D.C. with emerging artists, galleries, history, and more.
  • The Nature inFocus Photography Awards received entries from about 1,500 photographers from over 20 countries.
  • The Empire State Building launched its 12th annual photo contest with a $5,000 grand prize up for grabs.
  • It’s a busy weekend for StreetMeetDC who will be at Eastern Market tomorrow at 5 p.m. followed by an edit and chill session Sunday at 11:30 a.m. at Wonderland Ballroom. StreetMeetMD will also be hosting their second meet in Frederick later in the evening.

  • Winners of the 2023 iPhone Photography Awards have been announced with the grand prize going to Ivan Silva of Mexico.
  • Eater and Bon Appetit tasked AI with food photography; both the prompts and the results were rather varied but showed limitations.
  • The California Academy of Sciences’ BigPicture Photography Competition highlights Earth’s biodiversity and illustrates threats our planet faces.
  • Through a series of photographs, Bruce Weber remembers the years past on Montauk, revealing what New York’s art elite got up to when no one was watching.
  • The first of two full moons this month graced us on Tuesday morning with people across the world capturing the sturgeon supermoon in full effect.
  • Nate Langston Palmer immersed himself in the world of a dance crew of young Black men in D.C. in a project he began after running into a group of dancers in his childhood neighborhood of Columbia Heights.
  • Fall and winter courses at Photoworks start next month with registration open now. For those with printing experience looking to work independently, their darkroom and computer lab are also open to the public on Sundays for $10/hr and $20/hr respectively.

  • Exposed alum Chris Suspect will be hosting a 4-day photography workshop in Milan at the end of September.
  • Photographer Rafael Pavarotti went behind the scenes of Beyonce’s London performances at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in a new feature for British Vogue.
  • Rachel Hulin joins the Los Angeles Times as deputy director of photography.
  • A new book revisits the NYC Subway of the 1970s and 1980s through Willy Spiller’s 2,000+ photo collection.
