Claude Taylor: Crazy Enough to Have His Own Storefront

December 10, 2013 By James Calder

If you’ve ever wandered north along Connecticut Avenue NW from Dupont Circle, you may have noticed a little shop selling framed travel photographs. The storefront is painted TARDIS-blue, which is the perfect choice of color because there’s a lot more on the inside than you would think possible. Claude Taylor has been selling his work there since 1998. We asked him to shed some light on his business:

Were you selling your photographs anywhere else before you opened the store?

I began selling my photographs at art shows and street festivals in 1997.

Dudes and Nice Breeze | Red Onion Records | 11/16/13 by Michael Andrade

The great thing about in-store shows is that the audience has the opportunity to get up close and personal with the band. Michael Andrade shot this intriguing interaction between musician and fans at Red Onion Records in Adams Morgan. On good old film, to boot.

"fall" by James Anthony Campbell
“fall” by James Anthony Campbell

Among this week’s lip-smacking links: cats wearing tights; a concert photography controversy; the end of a photo service you’ve never heard of; and a glimpse inside Arthur C. Clarke’s house. So what are you waiting for? Go ahead sink your teeth in.

  • Photographer Noriko Hayahi spent months visiting villages in Kyrgyzstan to document the horrifying practice of bride kidnapping.
  • If you’re ever thinking of shooting a rodeo, here’s how not to do it.
  • Vast quantities of images from an abandoned psychiatric facility in New York? Don’t mind if I do.
  • I don’t really understand how or why, but I don’t care: Cats wearing tights.
  • In 1948, the building that is now home to the 9:30 Club was called Duke Ellington’s and it looked basically the same.
  • Had you ever heard of photo service Everpix? Nor had we, so the story of its demise is interesting and perhaps unsurprising.
  • Malls haven’t changed much since the eighties. But the hair sure has. Thank goodness.
  • There are two sides to every story: Concert Photographer Openly Ridiculed for His Technique, Band Comes to His Defense.
  • Ever wondered what it would be like to date yourself? Photographer Penelope Koliopoulou decided to explore exactly that concept in her series “Self Portraits” where she posed as both halves of various couples.
  • A guy walks up to the closed gate of the late Arthur C. Clarke’s house in Sri Lanka, ends up being invited inside and takes tons of cool photos. True story!
  • When old black and white photographs are colorized tastefully, the results can be pretty amazing.
  • Finally, congrats to our tiger cubs, Bandar and Sukacita, who this week not only acquired their new names but also passed their swim test.

Exposed Interview: Martin Locraft’s Big Road Trip

November 6, 2013 By James Calder

Photo by Martin LocraftD.C. photographer Martin Locraft took advantage of circumstance to take a long-anticipated cross-country road trip. I’d seen some of his photos pop up on social media while he was en route, so, after his return, I asked him about his preparations for the journey, his expectations, and what he’d learned from the experience. "Getting ready" by Pablo "Raw" Benavente
“Getting ready” by Pablo Benavente

I’ve shot the occasional DC Rollergirl photo, so I know a good one when I see it. The falling of the light on the skater’s face and upper body, whether naturally occurring or cleverly set up is what really makes this beautiful image from Pablo Benavente. The subtle rendition of the cluttered surroundings balances perfectly with the skater’s focused expression and the smooth skin tones of her arms, shoulders and back.
