Cock by Mike Maguire

I’ve seen many images of Katharina Fritsch’s Hahn/Cock since it’s arrival to the National Gallery of Art’s newly renovated East Building this year. The opaque electrifying blue rooster is a magnet to the eye. It’s placed on the roof facing the city—keeping a close watch over the governing landscape. Mike Maguire’s image is a decisively composed frame, which depicts a woman in a yellow sweater and a friend gazing upon the monumental azure poultry. Mike’s photograph makes us feel as if we are witnessing the scene being captured and not simply looking at an image of a wonderfully weird bird.

Don’t forget to enter your best photos into our annual contest!

Blue, orange, blue, red, blue, blue, black & white. I am absolutely in love with playful image by Ellie Van Houtte. My eye jumps back and forth between the complementary orange and blue hues in a delightful Mondrian-esque scene. The man in the Prussian Blue coat appears to be entering another world in this fanciful frame.

I was initially drawn to the postcard glow from the sun setting through the branches in Eric P‘s photo. The warm colors brighten up the landscape of a seemingly cold and still afternoon, which invites me in the frame.

In case you missed the big news, our 11th annual photography contest opened last week! The deadline for submissions is January 11, 2017. Don’t lose track!

When photographs reveal the existing landscape of common sites as anything but ordinary and completely askew, I am happy to see our weird world. Kaitlin Jencso‘s image of seemingly conflicting angles and a combination of odd textures makes me think, “wait, what?”

Chris Muth captures a hauntingly beautiful scene on the Potomac River. The young man’s gesture, pulling his body into the smoke, is what makes me so fascinated with this image.
