When air starts too get cold, simply looking at the ocean gives me the shivers. The black and white tones in Graeme.Sta.Graeme‘s photo create a greater contrast between the water itself and where the waves crash on the surface, making the sea appear more treacherous.  However, even though I describe the scene as something possibly unpleasant, I still want to be there.

When I noticed Nana Gyesie mentioned that this photo was taken with an iPhone I was even more impressed than I already was. His portrait featuring Nation of Islam members is striking and composed beautifully. It’s more than just the main subject’s glance slightly off the frame—the image is filled with many different moments that keep me locked in the scene.

Anytime I see a pipe my art history brain thinks of the painting, The Treachery of Images, by René Magritte. Ceci n’est pas une pipe—this is not a pipe, but an image of a man on his phone. I want Clif Burns‘ photo to be timeless, but it is not. The subject’s clothes, his hair style, and his method of smoking tobacco may depict another point in time. However, he uses a modern form of communication, and a Parkmobile sign leans behind him.

Instagram user Laura Fleischer frames a great moment at the National Gallery of Art. I like how the museum patron moves into a symmetrical photograph, breaking the simple scene. Fleischer captures the essence of walking through galleries rather than stopping to study a work of art – I think we’re all guilty of this sometimes.

Each week when I look at the #ExposedDC Instagram feed I’m amazed by all the talented photographers that Washington, D.C. has. I see many photographers, like Albert Ting, who know how to use light from indoor spaces to create a geometric oasis. Primary red, blue, and yellow hues are details in the room that the photographer didn’t add, but he doesn’t rely on a funky colorful spot to carry his image. Ting knows how to take a photograph and embraces his talent to produce a stunning image.
