Anytime I see a pipe my art history brain thinks of the painting, The Treachery of Images, by René Magritte. Ceci n’est pas une pipe—this is not a pipe, but an image of a man on his phone. I want Clif Burns‘ photo to be timeless, but it is not. The subject’s clothes, his hair style, and his method of smoking tobacco may depict another point in time. However, he uses a modern form of communication, and a Parkmobile sign leans behind him.
