Anytime I see a pipe my art history brain thinks of the painting, The Treachery of Images, by René Magritte. Ceci n’est pas une pipe—this is not a pipe, but an image of a man on his phone. I want Clif Burns‘ photo to be timeless, but it is not. The subject’s clothes, his hair style, and his method of smoking tobacco may depict another point in time.
