Joshua Yospyn’s “Suggested Reading List”

When we think of photography books, we first think of the hard bound copies of the works of our favorite photographers. It is the pages and pages of images that come to mind because of the way they draw us in. Delving into a photographer’s body of work can be inspiring, can make us think of new ideas, and can transport us into the way that someone else sees the world. Books on photographic theory, and biographies about photographers, provide us with a different insight. We can learn about the approach another photographer takes, or we can appreciate their work in reference to the circumstances of their life.

A few weeks ago local photographer Joshua Yospyn posted a Suggested Reading List on his blog. The twenty-six works that he chose were either theory based or biographical. They range from Susan Sontag’s popular “On Photography” to Timothy Egan’s biography of Edward Curtis. We asked Yospyn about his selections, and he gave us a great analysis of one of the books, “Ansel Adams: An Autobiography.” Yospyn’s passion for the book, and thoughts on Adam’s life, are a great introduction to his list.

My standout on that reading list is Ansel Adams’ hardcover autobiography, published just before he died in 1984.  The 400 pages of breezy text are interspersed with over 200 photographs, including not just the artist’s master works, but dozens of candids of himself. You can tell the man was a happy camper: he’s smiling or goofing off in every picture. It’s a lighthearted visual narrative from a master printer known to tackle heavy subjects like the Zone System and the technical mechanics of darkroom photography. [Read more…]

Exposed Interview: Matt Dunn, STRATA Collective

July 11, 2013 By Meaghan Gay

On its website, D.C. based STRATA Collective states that its photographers “seek to document the beauty, humor, mystery and absurdity in the quotidian.” We dug deeper into the group’s history and aims with founding member Matt Dunn.

What does STRATA mean?

Strata is the Latin word for street.

Why a collective? How did it form?

Aziz Yazdani organized some local DC street photographers to form a collective. The collective provides peer review, group marketing, resource sharing, as well as opportunities to hang out in pubs. Peer review is primarily in the form of image and image set critiques. STRATA, as a group, selects images and sequences them for a set. An image for STRATA needs to be selected by a majority of the group in order to be used in any of our online, printed or marketing materials. Our internal critiques are brutal but necessary to maintain our standard and foster individual growth. We believe that our group marketing efforts have a wider reach than could be achieved by any individual photographer. STRATA also shares resources. Everything from lenses, to lighting equipment, leads, contacts, hotels and ride sharing.

Exposed Interview: Positive Exposures

June 27, 2013 By Meaghan Gay

Two years ago D.C. photographers Dawn Deeks and John Pellett decided to join forces and take a different path with photography careers. They created a nonprofit organization that specializes in developing images for other nonprofits in need. Whether it is working with a Maryland based animal rescue group, documenting the work of a small school for young women in Senegal, or photographing the faces behind a health clinic in the Dominican Republic, the two are at home behind the lens wherever their work is needed. With the idea that “compelling media can inspire change around the world,” their collaboration has resulted in Positive Exposures.

DawnDeeks-3For our first Exposed Interview, we spoke with Dawn Deeks to see how this unique business model got off the ground.

Can you tell us how Positive Exposures got started?

3x3 logoI worked in the nonprofit world for many years before becoming a photographer full time. I know what it’s like to have a budget so stretched you don’t even have $75 to buy a stock photo, let alone hire a photographer to do original work. So in order for my past life to jive with my new one, I knew I would be working with nonprofits in some way, but I hadn’t really figured out how.
