This little girl’s excitement captures how I feel when I stumbled upon Wells Baum’s  Instagram feed. It’s a collection of trees, colorful shapes, and clever abstraction—it’s no surprise why I like it. This image is delightful in it’s spirit and wonderfully framed. Also, I really hope that is a drawing of an apple saying, “Avocado.”

Wolf Trap by Kevin Wolf
Wolf Trap by Kevin Wolf

I’ve spent a solid amount of time studying this photo trying to glean information from every vignette. Kevin Wolf’s omniscient presence shows the tiny little worlds inside a moment in time at a very specific place.

The heat has been unbearable lately. There have been too many long days indoors glancing out the window dreaming of the air cooling off. I also often dream of being in the ocean, like in this photo by Jaime Harris, and feeling the cold water against my skin. This image taken while the photographer was submerged in the ocean gives me the sensation that I am almost there.

One of my favorite things in life are woods thick with trees, featuring thousands of shades of greens. I love to look at images of these landscapes— and photographing them too. There’s something about the forest that captures my happiness, during all seasons and in different parts of the world. And so this photograph by Frank Hallam Day stuck with me. The circular glow illuminates the colors and shadows of the branches and leaves. But, because the flash of light is used to reveal the vegetation, the image is exposed for the sky, creating a strangely eerie yet pleasant tonal atmosphere.

Corpse Flower by Victoria Pickering
Corpse Flower by Victoria Pickering

The 3.5 foot tall Corpse Flower is currently in peak bloom at the United States Botanical Garden. During this time the plant secretes a smell so foul that it’s compared to that of rotting flesh. My social media feeds have been flooded with images of this grotesque but beautiful bloom. Victoria Pickering’s image wonderfully captures the act of documenting this rare occasion in full, personal point-of-view.
