Meeting at the White House by Shamila Chaudhary
Meeting at the White House by Shamila Chaudhary

I love this image—plain and simple. Photographer, Shamila Chaudhary, captures a charming and jovial moment of her daughter being quintessentially childlike in a formal space. Not only is this image wonderfully composed and demonstrates a good photographer’s foresight, it warms my heart. When I showed this image to my mother, she made a delightful observation, comparing the body language of the woman in Andrew Wyeth’s Christina’s World to the girl’s lean and air-swept air.

Shamila is one of twelve local photographers whose work will be on exhibit at the Crystal City Underground photo walk starting in early October. While this particular image is not one that will be in that show, it is an example of her series, which feature dreamlike images of her daughter growing up. Keep your eyes peeled for more on the show soon, including details of the opening reception.

Flickr user alsacienne uses the window panes to divide this scene in multiple little moments. What a good frame for today’s In Frame.

I was first drawn to this image because of the bright green patch of grass. The geometrically framed image lead my eye to the red fence with two trees behind it–the colors and shapes were pleasing. When I read the caption that this was a prison, it really gave me pause. I was conflicted by what the structures represent but excited by the colors and shapes. Then, I realized the way photographer, Kristin Adair, uses the brick wall to frame the image, subtly closing the viewer out. This image is wonderfully composed and a powerful metaphor.

In Frame: Gutters & Gargoyles

September 12, 2016 By Heather Goss

On Saturday night, 90 photographers came out to explore the eaves, belltower, and Nave of the Washington National Cathedral, followed by a concert by two great bands, Sarah Borges & the Broken Singles and local outfit Broke Royals, in a room filled with music-themed photography that we hand-plucked from all of you. We had a fantastic time and an even better time looking through all the photos the attendees have posted already. You can find them all by searching social media for #gutterbugs and #exposeddc. Our enormous thanks go to Dan Rose and his team at the Cathedral for bringing this opportunity to us–we certainly hope it won’t be the last.

Enjoy the gallery below of the crazy gargoyles and beautiful sunsets that everyone found on Saturday.

A candid moment captured perfectly by photographer Tom Mullins, who enhances the tension of his subject with his framing, surrounding her with big, contrasting swatches of natural textures.

You can see more of Tom’s excellent work in our music-themed exhibit, just one component of our big event at the National Cathedral this Saturday evening! There’s still space in our exclusive Gargoyles and Gutters tour on the eaves of the Cathedral. You’ll need to sign up here and get your $15 ticket for the Sarah Borges & The Broken Singles concert (you also get a free, local beer!). See you Saturday!
