  • Facebook will soon let you protect your photos and control where they are shared on Instagram and Facebook through their Rights Manager, which requires an application currently.
  • Model Emily Ratajkowski shares how she learned that her image is not her own, having been sued by a paparazzo for posting a picture on Instagram that he took of her and having an image included in Richard Prince’s “Instagram Paintings.”
  • The 11th annual Audubon Photography Awards introduced new categories for recognizing an image that is as artistic as it is revealing and for illustrating the crucial relationship between native plants and birds. Also, it’s just a great roundup of stunning images of birds.
  • As part of Photoville, Leica is hosting conversations with photographers on various topics through early October.
  • Earlier this month, the winners of the 2020 National Park Photo Contest were announced.
  • View 10 years of the British Wildlife Photography awards in pictures.
  • Photographers across Mexico have been documenting the challenges of distance learning.

We are proud to partner with Dupont Underground and Shedrick Pelt on the “rise up.” photography competition and exhibit documenting the Black Lives Matter movement. The deadline for entries is this Sunday at 10 a.m. We look forward to reviewing submissions soon and seeing this pivotal time documented through your perspective.

  • Our next virtual roundtable will be on September 25 at 6 p.m. Join us to hang out with fellow photographers as we share photos on the theme of change.
  • Winners of the Insight Investment Astronomy Photographer of the Year awards include images of the Milky Way, California nebula, and Andromeda galaxy.
  • Winners of the 2020 BigPicture awards were also announced recently. The competition’s goal is to celebrate and illustrate the rich diversity of life on Earth and inspire action to protect and conserve it through the power of imagery. A special live program will be streamed on Tuesday at 8 p.m. EDT on their Facebook and YouTube channel.
  • “100 Days of Solitude,” an online exhibition that reflects the world during the strange times of COVID runs through October 18 on Photoworks’ website.
  • La Cosecha is holding in-person pop-ups featuring the works of photojournalist Laura Grier along with Peruvian crafts, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursdays through Sundays for the next three weeks at La Cosecha Market (1280 4th St NE).
  •  The DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities exhibition “Through Our Eyes” highlights the point of view of minority artists who create complex and unconventional work exploring their unique experiences, narratives, and perspectives on the world. The exhibition is on a virtual platform through October 9, and artist talks are being held on Zoom.
  • The Smithsonian is reopening four more museums including the National Portrait Gallery where you can view the “Portraits of the World: Denmark” exhibit through Oct. 12. Most locations will require free timed-entry passes that can be reserved online or by phone.
  • French-Algerian photographer Mohamed Bourouissa has won the Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation Prize.
  • Art All Night has moved the festival online for a virtual edition during the last two weeks of September with showcase performances on Friday and Saturday nights.

  • Exposed DC is happy to partner with Shedrick Pelt and Dupont Underground as they co-curate a Black Lives Matter photography competition, titled “rise up.” Submissions are open now with the exhibit slated to open in October both as a virtual exhibition and on-site at Dupont Underground.

  • The first pictures from the Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2020 awards were released last week and include these adorable possums peeking out of their hiding spot.
  • More animal pictures, you say? The 2020 Comedy Wildlife Photo Awards are sure to put a smile on your face.
  • Fifteen photography students and recent alumni created still lifes featuring oversized handbags for Vogue’s September issue.
  • Between 1957 and 1972, two groups revolutionized photography in Japan.
  • Hiram Garcia assembled some of his photography work into a book called “The Rock Through the Lens: His Life, His Movies, and His World.”
  • One of the wildfires in California was reportedly caused by a smoke bomb used at a gender reveal party, a reminder to be cautious and respectful when it comes to props and accessories used during photoshoots.
  • Yesterday, vivo announced a partnership with National Geographic to launch a global mobile photography competition, the vivo VISION+ Mobile Photography Awards.
  • Bart Kuykens, perhaps best known for his coffee table book series of Porsche automobiles and their owners, discusses his approach to the art of photography.

  • The Second Annual Funk Parade Photo Gallery, a collaborative pictorial essay contrasting the Black Broadway of the past with the Black Broadway of today, will be this Sunday with both in-person and online events.
  • Sony invites female photographers to apply for the Alpha Female ambassador program, with grants for projects offering $5,000, Sony gear, and more. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis through February with winners announced every two weeks starting in September.
  • A photography enthusiast inherited a large collection of photos shot by his grandfather and started digitizing the film recently, discovering street photos showing life in Europe over half a century ago.
  • Adorama’s eighth Create No Matter What theme is “Create Your World,” focusing on composite photography. Deadline for submissions is September 2.
  • Entries are being accepted through October 8 for the second annual Leica Women Foto Project Award, a juried program where three photographers will receive an award to support a personal project relevant to today’s social and political climate, as told through the female perspective.
  • Daniel Boud has photographed the Sydney Opera House hundreds of times but his latest series is unlike any other with things much quieter than usual nowadays.
  • Rare color photographs offer an intimate glimpse of the 1963 March on Washington.
  • Fares Micue surrounds herself with butterflies, feathers, and other items in her vividly composed self portraits.
  • Two Australian photographers used flour and studio lighting to capture parkour athletes for a personal project.

  • CNN looked back at some of the most striking photo series published over the last year, from vintage Nigerian style to exploring the relationship between humans and animals.  
  • Photographer and educator Stella Johnson explores the elements of light, composition, and shadow in daily life in Crete, Greece.
  • Arseniy Neskhodimov was named the overall winner of the Wellcome photography prize this year for his series Prozac that explores the pain of depression and how to cope with it.
  • An astronaut and photographer collaboratively document the International Space Station in a new book.
  • Jamie Rose, co-founder of Momenta Group and one of our previous Best in Show judges, compiles a list of jobs, events, workshops, and opportunities for photographers and creative content providers.
  • Photographs of generations of Black suffragists document their thwarted and central roles in the history of women’s rights.
  • Photoworks issued a call for entries for “100 Days of Solitude,” an online exhibition to reflect the world during the strange times of COVID. The entry fee is $25 and includes up to 5 images; deadline for submissions is August 25.
