  • DC Home Rule 50 — a photography exhibition commemorating the 50th anniversary of the District of Columbia Home Rule act by exploring the urgent themes of self-governance, full citizenship, free elections, and DC statehood — opens tonight at the DC History Center, 5:00-7:00 p.m., free.
  • Head to the East Building Auditorium at the National Gallery of Art tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. for a special program highlighting short films including “Perfect Image?” that exposes stereotypical images of Black women and explores women’s own ideas of self-worth and “John Davies: Exploring a Sense of Place in the Landscape,” a portrait of the photographer and their process.
  • Photoworks is hosting a photo flea market on Saturday, April 22. You can sign up as a seller for a fee of $10 per table.
  • Join Mac Cosgrove-Davies at the Arlington Central Library tomorrow morning as he demonstrates how tintype portraits are made using the wet plate collodion process.
  • Aperture and Google’s Creator Labs announced the second season of the Creator Labs Photo Fund, an initiative to support image makers.
  • Polaroid’s limited edition Reclaimed Blue film was an “experimental fluke.”
  • The 2022 Architectural Photography Awards Photo of the Year shortlist has been released.
  • If you’ve been to the Tidal Basin to see the cherry blossoms or even just seen photos from others, chances are you’ve seen Stumpy, the struggling cherry tree that has gained quite a following over recent years.

  • The regional winners of the 2023 World Press Photo awards have been announced.
  • Call to Earth, a CNN editorial series about the environmental challenges facing our planet, explores 10 photographs that made the world wake up to climate change.
  • Fujifilm is halting production of a range of color negative 35mm film as well as reversal film in both 35mm and 120 formats due to a shortage of raw materials.
  • Last week, a geomagnetic storm spawned brilliant northern lights as far south as Virginia, North Carolina, and Arizona.

  • A Reddit user ran an experiment using an intentionally blurred image of the moon that Samsung’s processing enhanced rather…robustly, shall we say? Samsung responded that its technology uses a “detail improvement function.”
  • Since late 2015, Sean Scheidt has been organizing his “Time Spent” collection that documents his relatives to preserve memories and also helps him process grief.
  • Join StreetMeetDC at U Street Metro tomorrow at 3 p.m. as they return to the spot where it all started 8 years ago.
  • NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope captured the rarely seen prelude to supernova.
  • Foxes came out on top in the British Wildlife Photography Awards.
  • Sony designed a camera kit for people with visual impairments. The viewfinder can project images directly onto a person’s retina.

  • Launched six years ago, Women Photograph now consists of 1,600 photographers from more than 100 countries. A new book features a collection of work by 100 members.
  • Fernando Braga captured lightning striking the iconic Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro.
  • Voting is open through March 14 for the RSPCA’s Young Photographer People’s Choice Awards, a competition for young photographers.
  • Head to Photoworks Gallery tomorrow from 5:00-7:00 p.m. for the opening reception of “The Mind’s Eye” exhibit featuring the work of students from two Montgomery County high schools.

  • The 2023 Leica Women Foto Project Awardees were announced this week.
  • The World Nature Photography awards 2022 received entries from 45 countries. The grand prize winner captured a crocodile lurking in the mud in Zimbabwe.
  • Photographer Tommy Kha frames his own American South with portraits that blend his Asian heritage and family history with the mythology of the South.
  • Join APA | DC for happy hour on Thursday, March 16 from 5:30-8:00 p.m. at St Vincent Wine.
