We want to thank everyone who has participated in our virtual roundtables for joining us as well as sharing valuable feedback about the work being shared and the sessions themselves. We’d like to explore an idea that was suggested recently to provide the theme in advance along with some additional time for people to make images specifically for the next session. Our next virtual roundtable will focus on framing and is slated for July 22. Hope this provides some inspiration, and we look forward to seeing what you create!

• Big, bittersweet news from our friends at Critical Exposure—Adam Levner, their executive director and one of the organization’s co-founders, is stepping down after 16 years of leadership on August 31. A committee has been appointed to manage the executive search and Koya Leadership Partners has been retained to guide the hiring process. The position profile can be viewed here.
• Earlier this week, Focus on the Story announced the winner of their inaugural visual storytelling grant, as well as the best single image winner and runners up.
• Adorama is encouraging creatives to #CreateNoMatterWhat, with the latest challenge focused on nighttime photography. Photos submitted by July 8 before midnight will be eligible for a prize package worth over $3,000.
• BET features D.C. photographer Tony Mobley’s images as part of a “Content for Change” public service announcement.
• As an exhibition of Gordon Parks’ enduring works opens at a gallery in London, AnOther gathered a selection of his quotes on the power of photography.
• Applications are now open for the Fall 2020 Cohort of the 202Creates Residency Program, which will commence in September. 
• A photography series celebrates unusual sights in London away from tourist hotspots.

• Join Focus on the Story today at 4:00 p.m. for a panel discussion with Black photojournalists and photo editors on their experiences covering the national reckoning on race and justice, their role and responsibility in documenting these historic events, and why it’s critical that Black photographers be front and center in telling this story.
• Earlier this week, Authority Collective, Color Positive, Diversify Photo, The Everyday Projects, Juntos Photo Coop, the National Press Photographers Association, Natives Photograph, and Women Photograph announced the launch of the Photo Bill of Rights—a call to action, guide, ethical code, and framework for lens-based workers globally.
• The Pulitzer Center and Diversify Photo are administering a series of reporting grants for freelance photojournalists to support underreported stories told by journalists historically underrepresented in the American press. Grants will be awarded at $1,000 each, and the application is open through July 19, 2020.
• The Washington Post is seeking a staff photojournalist who will conceive, research, and develop assignments related to issues of race and identity. Applicants need to submit a resume, cover letter, and a portfolio link or PDF by July 6 for consideration.
• Four photographers shared their photos from the Juneteenth Million Moe March with BYT.
• Last Saturday’s 20 photographs of the week selected by The Guardian capture scenes from around the world including the return of soccer, the impact of COVID-19, and Black Lives Matter protests.
• Xapiri, a Cusco-based art gallery and media production studio, is working to raise awareness of the situation facing indigenous people in the Amazon rainforest as they face the pandemic as well as funds to help them navigate it.
• Fstoppers asks readers, “What’s the worst photography advice you’ve ever been given?”
• After 84 years, Olympus announced it is leaving the camera business.

• A Milwaukee-based photographer is taking 1,000 pictures of Black people as a way to help bring people together, starting on social media, in a campaign for Juneteenth.

• Capital Photography Center is offering a DSLR photography basics class tomorrow, 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., $99. Students will be required to follow COVID-19 safety practices, conduct a self-screening health assessment, and sign a waiver of liability prior to attending.
• A new book reexamines one of Gordon Parks’ powerful and prescient projects when he documented urban crime for an assignment with Life magazine more than sixty years ago.
• Coverage of the protests has opened up dialogue about the racism, sexism, ageism, and classism in the photography industry. Black photographers and photo editors Danielle Scruggs, Lynsey Weatherspoon, Wale Agboola, and Brent Lewis talked to Aperture about why that is and ways to address it, including how photo editors and photographers can help and ways to make it more impactful long term.
• Brent Lewis, who is a photo editor at The New York Times and a co-founder of Diversify Photo, also spoke with Amy Silverman on Daylight Dialogues about the importance of hiring Black photographers and the work that needs to be done in the editorial world. 
• Black photographers from across the U.S. share their experience documenting the protests.
• Photoworks issued a call for entries for photographers aged 12 to 18 for an online exhibition, “Here We Go Again,” which will explore connections between images being made today and the idea of past and present.
• Italian photographer Guido Guidi spent decades making photos inspired by and relating to the moon.
• Melissa Breyer’s “True Stories” series blurs reality on the streets of NYC with elements of film noir, vintage film, and classic fashion photography serving as her inspiration.

• The Uncommon District published a collection of photos documenting the Black Lives Matter protests around the DMV area over the past couple of weeks.
• A photography teacher at the Baltimore School for the Arts wanted to give seniors a sense of normalcy by documenting the missed milestone of prom so he offered socially distanced portraits. 
• Ernesto Bazan joins Focus on the Story today at noon for an online talk about his fourth book about Cuba, 25 de Noviembre, which he never expected to publish because until five years ago, he didn’t expect to return to the island where he had lived previously for 14 years before leaving with his family in 2006.
• Brisbane underwater photographer Jasmine Carey won the grand prize in the Hamdan International Photography award with her image of a humpback whale and its two-week old calf off the coast of Tonga.
• Winners of this year’s Sony World Photography Awards were announced earlier this week, selected from over 345,000 images submitted.
• Rey Lopez documented scenes of D.C.’s outdoor-only restaurants as Mayor Muriel Bowser’s stay-at-home order officially lifted two weeks ago. 
• The British Journal of Photography returns to excerpts of interviews with Carrie Mae Weems, Dana Scruggs, Lola Flash, and Mark Sealy who invite us to look and consider—to acknowledge and act upon injustices that pervade the past and the present.
• On Wednesday, photojournalists Laurel Chor and Leah Millis will join Focus on the Story for a discussion about Hong Kong’s struggle for democracy and their coverage of the movement.
• Stories That Move You, a Saskatchewan LGBTQ photography project launching both virtually and in person, features eight people who are part of the community. Each image also includes a description and audio recording of the person telling the story behind the image in their own words.
• Wednesday’s Flickr Explore page featured a curated selection of photos from the Black Lives Matter movement that includes the recent protests, historical photos from the Civil Rights movement, and other demonstrations and protests over the years.

• Focus on the Story is hosting a virtual happy hour critique session with the DC Street Photography Collective today from 4-6 p.m. Panelists include Ryan Madison, Ashley Tillery, Sofia Sebastian, Kanayo Adibe, and Tom Mullins.
• Women Photograph created “The Journal” as a way for members of the community to document their private spaces and daily lives during COVID-19. 
• Profoto is offering a chance to win a Profoto B10 with their #ProfotoPets competition running through June 24.
• Photography students in Paul D’Amato’s “The Documentary Book” class at Columbia College Chicago usually have individual final projects, but this year it will be a collaborative one as many students couldn’t complete their original projects due to social distancing measures.
• Professional adventure photographer Chris Burkard and National Geographic photographer Ami Vitale share tips on how to practice and hone your skills right now at home to become a better travel photographer.
• Mark Seliger, whose esteemed resume includes a decade as chief photographer at Rolling Stone and lots of work for Vanity Fair and GQ, discusses the role of fashion in his photography. He’s also partnered with Christie’s to auction off 25 iconic celebrity portraits with all of the proceeds going to charities of the celebrity subjects’ choice.

• Steve Benjamin is usually an aquatic photographer, but he’s turned his lens to birds visiting his backyard where he created a studio setting for wild birds by positioning a feeder in a small sunny area with nearby shade and mounted additional underwater video lights. The results are stunningly dramatic.
