I know this experience all too well. I love how Noe Todorovich captured this familiar scene for photographers—the lighting is beautiful. The more I look at the empty chair illuminated by the forever-awake computer screen, I am reminded that even though I may not be sitting in the chair physically working on projects, I am constantly working on them in my mind, all day and all night. It’s a photographer’s dilemma—work on your passion, or sleep.

Flickr user Tadael Tadael “caught these two gentlemen reminiscing in Dupont Circle.” They seem like old friends, he suggested. I think he’s right. I am drawn to images of nostalgia—they make me feel warm and comforted. Here, that same warmth and comfort are reflected by the quality of light cast on the two men. The tone of the image suggests an older generation of photography, in which film was the only way to capture an image.

It’s not surprise that I am attracted to color and shapes. They are the rudimentary elements of art and when I see them used in such a simplistic way, such as in this image by Shamila Chaudhary, my eye and mind are instantly pleased and calmed. While the colors red and yellow are said to cause tension, I don’t feel it as the boy’s confident, natural stride smooths the friction as he turns the corner.

It’s a shame that I don’t see more photographs of the National Museum of the American Indian. The architecture of the building is unique and has a serene feeling to it. Here, John Walters frames the interior graphically so that it highlights the lines of the building but allows the colorful flags from native nations to become the more important part of the image.

I can’t stop staring at this image. Dennis Turbeville does indeed “get wide” and constructs an exceptionally geometric scene. The lines within the frame create a tension which warps the picture plane, confusing the photograph’s dimensionality.
